The grift is substantial while the actual homeowners with uninsured damages are often left fighting for scraps.

The idea of letting the president decide how much money and to whom gets paid to the cities and states is a terrible idea, but all the others seem to be worse.

This is kind of where I'm at. The grift at every level of FedGov HAS to be stopped, or at least reduced by 50% or more, or we are finished as a nation. The only way to do that is wholesale elimination of some agencies while taking an ax to others.

States don't have the capacity to deploy all of the resources for mass disasters, they will need some help from the feds. If not FEMA, then which agency is going to handle that?

The vast vast majority of resources come directly from the states in the form of local first responders and the national guard. FEMA people just like to show up with their FEMA vests when the camera crews are around.

Why? You dont trust your state to properly use the federal disaster relief money that will be given directly to the state?

You must've not paid attention to FEMA workers skipping North Carolinians devastated homes because they had flags hanging from their eaves or certain political signs in their yards

They did it in Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia as well.

In dealing with FEMA in the past (Hurricane Katrina - 2018), I have also observed many improvements. The hardest thing to deal with in the beginning was convincing FEMA that they were the victim especially in criminal cases. We were told by FEMA that the most important letter is the "E" for emergency. Let's just get the money out there and the auditors can correct everything later. As time evolved, FEMA has moved toward taking the posture of "we only want to be the bank" and forward all responsibilities to the states. I have been retired for a while, and I hope that whatever decision is made will be an improvement.

In 2016, FEMA was useless. It was the Louisiana program that actually helped later on. All FEMA did was push SBA loans on people that didn't understand what they were getting into and also denied a lot of stuff that should have been covered for people that didn't have insurance and were not required at the time to. It was red tape after red tape.

I didn't have any issues with FEMA after the last storm, but their contracted adjusters (from central Louisiana) were one giant pain in the arse to deal with. Even the FEMA office rep was pissed off at the way they were handling the claim.

It needs to change, but I don't know if the funds being doled directly out of the Oval Office is the right change or not. I guess we'll soon see...

FEMA is just a gatekeeper to the funds. They do basically nothing except tell the States what paperwork to do to get funding.

If that funding goes directly to the States, this will be great.

If he intends to cut all the funding, coastal States will have a difficult time managing hurricanes with the budget they have now.

FEMA has been worthless for a decade anyway.
