Fellow Keto Baws and Soon to be Converts: DUI Potential

A 59-year-old man undergoing weight loss with very low calorie diets (VLCD) attempted to drive a car, which was fitted with an alcohol ignition interlock device, but the vehicle failed to start. Because the man was a teetotaller, he was surprised and upset by this result. VLCD treatment leads to ketonemia with high concentrations of acetone, acetoacetate and ß-hydroxybutyrate in the blood. The interlock device determines alcohol (ethanol) in breath by electrochemical oxidation, but acetone does not undergo oxidation with this detector. However, under certain circumstances acetone is reduced in the body to isopropanol by hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). The ignition interlock device responds to other alcohols (e.g. methanol, n-propanol and isopropanol), which therefore explains the false-positive result. This ‘side effect’ of ketogenic diets needs further discussion by authorities when people engaged in safety-sensitive work (e.g. bus drivers and airline pilots) submit to random breath-alcohol tests.

Stay safe out there. Depending on the level of your podunk police department or employers breathalyzer you can pop hot for a false positive. Remember always maintain your innocence, do not speak to the police, and ask for a blood test if in fact you are Keto.

Why did he have that in his car?

His employer had it installed on a company car I believe.

Simple solution, don't have a breathalyzer in your car

Guy in story immediately loses credibility

Gotcha, being severely fatigued and driving can get you a dui charge too, btw

Not directly related since this guy is claiming no alcohol intake but I was trying a Keto diet and had two drinks at a social function. I drink more than I should and two drinks is a very normal intake for me which should have little effect.
I ended up almost face down drunk and partially blacked out that evening. Really opened my eyes and happily I was not driving that night.
Be careful out there.

DWI Conviction=ignition interlock device.
Guy should have UBER’ed. He did this to himself.

Yes very well known side effect of being Keto. You lose all alcohol tolerance. Secondly, should not really be intaking much alcohol if any at all while on Keto. The body stops to metabolize the alcohol killing the effects of Keto.

Not to mention the massive hangover that comes from drinking on keto.

Drink an electrolyte water solution in the morning and it’ll clear up quickly.

I am very much looking forward to this. I'm starting the week after Christmas. I have already been on a lower carb diet, but the hardcore switch happens after Christmas.
Giving up beer is going to sucks donkey balls especially at the golf course.

He had that in his cat because he had multiple DUIs. No sympathy from me.
