Federal authorities say they've broken up a $1.2 billion Medicare scam that peddled unneeded orthopedic braces to hundreds of thousands of seniors via foreign call centers.

The Justice Department announced charges Tuesday against 24 people across the U.S., including doctors accused of writing bogus prescriptions for unneeded back, shoulder, wrist and knee braces. Others charged included owners of call centers, telemedicine firms and medical equipment companies.

Medicare's anti-fraud unit said it's taking action against 130 medical equipment companies implicated. They billed the program a total of $1.7 billion, of which more than $900 million was paid out.

Telemarketers would reach out to seniors offering "free" orthopedic braces, also touted through television and radio ads. Beneficiaries who expressed interest would be patched through to call centers involved in the scheme. Officials described an "international telemarketing network" with call centers in the Philippines and throughout Latin America.

The doctors would write prescriptions for orthopedic braces, regardless of whether the patients needed them or not. In some cases several braces were prescribed for the same patient.

The call centers would collect prescriptions and sell them to medical equipment companies, which would ship the braces to beneficiaries and bill Medicare. Medical equipment companies would get $500 to $900 per brace from Medicare and would pay kickbacks of nearly $300 per brace.

I get a couple of calls a week from an Indian guy who asks if I or any of my family has had cancer.

And I get a few calls wanting to get me a back brace at no charge.

They should get the death penalty.

There needs to be an absolute zero tolerance policy on fraud and abuse of the taxpayers dollar.

Also, shut down any advertising (including the god damn government) offering “assistance” to get freebies.

And while they’re at it, forbid all legal services from television advertising.

Par for the course for a government run program.

You think a private entity would just "whoopsie" 1 billion dollars?

Reason eleventythousand to limit the scope of government.

We don’t need regulators, and its’ regulations are choking the health industry just like all industry. Let the free market sort it out!

Oh, wait....

I’m not surprised. The US Government has a history of getting fleeced before they wise up.

Remember the $600 hammers from a few years ago?

The government is the problem not the victim, they don't have to show a profit, and will create ways to spend any money they are given.

While the Defense department does pay insane prices for some simple items again it is largely their own fault. They create bid specifications that steer the bid to only to a specific vendor eliminating any chance of price reduction through competition, and requiring often unnecessary and expensive testing for items that add dramatically to the cost.

The 600 dollar hammer was a myth created by a accounting error.
