Took a call today from a guy stating he was Sergeant Gilmore with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office here in Alabama. He wanted me to go to a private secure place to talk to take down important information he needed to talk to me about. He stated I signed my name on a Federal Jury Duty summons that came to my house in February and sent it back but didn't show up and because of that two "case numbers" had been opened for Failure to Appear and Contempt of Court. I replied that I worked from home and that no package has come to this house for something like that. He gave me two case numbers. I asked if this was a joke, to which he stated no sir this is serious. I asked where are you located and he stated Shelby County Sheriff's Office. I replied, yeah but where, which branch? He wouldn't/couldn't say. That's when my BS meter went off. He said I needed to bring two forms of ID down to an address that his Alleviation Officer was going to provide so they could do a signature verification test.

He connected me to his Alleviation Officer, Officer Diaz with the US Marshalls Service for North Alabama and he needed more information from me. Diaz stated to not disconnect the call to stay on the line. I asked Diaz what his phone number was and he repeated to not disconnect the call. To which my BS meter went to 100% and told him to get screwed and hung up.

Neither of them got to the point of asking for personal information.

I called the Shelby County Sheriff's office right after and they stated it was indeed a scam.

Just warning y'all so you or your elderly parents get suckered.

Every time I got a letter for jury duty I ran it through my shredder. No issues no follow up.
If it comes 1st class and not certified you can't prove I saw it.

People need to understand that these agencies will not contact you by phone or by text.

The IRS, FBI, etc., won’t text you or call you.

That isn’t how they work.

You get a certified letter, an in person visit, or you get arrested.

Got the same kind of scam several weeks ago. It was conveniently (inconveniently?) after I had a summons and didnt hear anything back after registering. I was actually nervous until I told him I would head down to the sheriff's office to pay and he said I couldnt hang up or I'd be arrested.

Told him to go frick himself after that.

I got that last year while I was at work. They ask you to trace their number as proof that they are the sheriff's office, because they can spoof the number.

I finally told the guy where I was and my exact location in the building, told him to come fricking get me, and hung up.

Glad you sniffed it out. I got hacked recently and eventually got a scammer calling me and had ALL of my info recited to me over a phone call. Scared me actually. Why were they calling me? Because they didn't have the last piece of the puzzle, a 2FA type approval. They tried everything to get me to do what they wanted. They are quite good, and it wasn't some foreigner. Competent speaking resident here. They will get better than 1/2 the people they call I think just out of fear.

Man y’all are doing it wrong. Y’all should’ve set up a time and place for them to meet you and told them you’d pay like $500 to make it go away. And then send them to some random spot down the bayou and make them waste their time.

Scammers are the fricking worst.

Your ba meter should have gone off based on the fact that they called you. Not to mention a sheriff isn't going to be calling you on behalf of a Federal charge. Any of these agencies aren't calling you beforehand. They are coming to get you where you are whether you like it or not

Rumor is it’s a bunch of dudes in the local jails and prisons with cell phones behind this particular scam, they tried me a year or so ago. Snuffed it out pretty quick but the guy sounded legit, I could see why some Boomers would fall for it.

Years back here in Az I had a friend who was an adjuster for an insurance company. He got the form in the mail, filled out and sent back in that he could make it. Then the week of when he was supposed to go one of the hurricanes hit Florida. Being on the CAT team ( Catastrophe ) he flew out the same day and was down there for a month.

Got back home and the 2nd day federal Marshalls were at his front door with a warrant for him to appear in court. Court was Phoenix which is about 3 hours from where we live. Shows up in front of the judge and there were about 20 people there for the same thing. This was the hanging judge, he was about 9th to go in front of the judge. Judge didn't care what their excuse was fined them $3000 each.

He goes up, judge says you promised to appear and failed to show. Explained about the hurricane, he was on the Cat team for a month there. Judge says do you have proof? Yes showed him emails, receipts. Still fined him 300.
