Federal agents will be sent into Memphis and St. Louis to help fight violent crime in the cities, the Justice Department announced Thursday.
Attorney General William Barr said the officers will help local police tamp down rising crime rates, particularly gun violence, as part of the federal government’s “Operation Legend” initiative.
“The most basic responsibility of government is to protect the safety of our citizens,” Barr said in a statement Thursday.
“Today, we have extended Operation Legend to Memphis and St. Louis, two cities experiencing increases in violent crime that no resident of those cities should have to accept as part of everyday life.”
The deployment of federal officers has stirred controversy amid unrest in Portland — where the troops were criticized by the mayor for their handling of protests against police violence
The issue in a lot of these cities are activist prosecutors and judges (think Trudy White) that go especially lenient on violent crime. The problem is not law enforcement. Federal agents will mean federal charges and likely hard time farther away from those cities for violent crime.
They've been doing this in Chicago the past couple of weeks. It's now coming to Memphis and St. Louis with the cooperation of local police.

Not a huge fan of federal agents doing this....but if the locals only set up a revolving door for violent offenders (Baton Rouge and New Orleans posters know this setup well), there isn't anyone else other than the feds to actually enforce the law.

Memphis isn't like those other places, crime in the hood is huge and there are not enough cops....no budget to hire more... when they catch them they go to jail....we need double the cops in the hood

They have been doing this for years under a variety of names “Operation Exile”, “Operation Cease Fire”. They had this program in NOLA for years and it worked. But liberals, as much as they want crime to fall under their administration, hate the concept.
It goes like this. Locals arrest a felon with a gun, bring him to station, federal agents charge him on the spot federally, they move for No Bond based on “danger to community” and subject is tried, convicted and shipped out of state to a federal penetientary within months. The fact that he never hits the streets again after the initial arrest and the quick trial and sentencing means that crime quickly falls. All the politicians take a bow, feds leave, new generation of criminals takes over, cycle repeats.
But these programs 100% prove that the vast majority of crime is committed by a very small part of the community. But, much like our foreign military adventures, no one knows how to follow through after solving the immediate problem. So it just repeats itself. I know I don’t know the answer but we should be jailing these fricks until someone figures it out.
Can’t have people out robbing raping killing and social workers aren t going to stop them.

Me neither. These communities need to fight for themselves. Especiallyil if the local elected government isn't asking for help. Now if the locals and their elected leaders are under siege and begging for help, then yes you help them. But if the locals and their government are OK with burning their own city down, let them deal with the consequences.
The federal government getting involved isn't going to solve anything. Bandaid on a bullet wound.

Thinking about the reality of New Orleans is almost too depressing for me to grasp. Every single goddamn mayor for the last 2 decades I keep saying it can't get any worse. Whatever the next one does to top Latoya will be legendary.

Locals requested federal help for this. This isn't unilateral.

Solve? Probably not but here in KC the feds were able to pull over 200 violent offenders off the streets in the first weekend after they arrived. They have resources for these cases that locals do not.

Just last night/this morning (1AM) in STL a popular car club president and anti-gun violence advocate was gunned down at a STL gas station. Over 50 shell casings at the scene.

Wrong. The driving force in poor communities is that men are not the primary breadwinner. Those checks are paid to mothers. Even if the income is small it still gives power over the man making $8-10 per hour. The emasculated man is the drug using criminal, this is true in white, black, Hispanic, and Native American communities. These mothers are not willingly going to cede power or control their earning ability with birth control.
