I like a lot of the mountain towns in western North Carolina. Bryson City is the first one that comes to mind.

I mention Taos a few times in my book. My mother lived there from 9th grade to 11th grade. She moved back home to Baton Rouge after her dad died her Senior year.

I like Salida, CO...don't know if its considered a "Mountain Town?"

Haines, AK. On the coast, but home to a lot of extreme sports stuff in winter. Not overrun with tourists, no chains, everything is "local" and authentic. Plus it's gorgeous.
