Favorite mid sized truck....

These models seem to be about the same size as the full sized trucks from 15-20 years ago.
Toyota Tacoma - the segment best seller with good resale value, solid expected reliability, but with an aging design. Gasoline V6 engine seems more optimized for Toyota’s cars and crossovers. No optional diesel or V8 (although Toyota’s 4.6L V8 has been fitted to trucks of this sized before).
Chevy Colorado - updated for 2020 - second best seller with loyal following. It ride/handles well and can be had with a very sturdy and fuel efficient Duramax Diesel engine. It also has a very hard core off road package with locking diffs front and rear. Wish it had an optional 5.3L V8, as the gas V6 needs a little more torque. There’s a gas 4 cylinder and 6 speed manual model if you are really cheap.
Jeep Gladiator - new for 2019....extremely cool looking but also pricey. The Rubicon model is an ace off road and there is a soft top model available. Diesel engine option coming soon, and the gas V6 is similar to the Colorado - needs more torque.
Honda Ridgeline - not my favorite, but a solid, practical contender if you are loyal to Honda. Ideal for suburban soccer moms and dads. Probably extremely reliable and ride/handles well. Only one powertrain, and it’s a very good gasoline V6 engine.
Ford Ranger - new for 2019, but kind of disappointing. I wanted to see a diesel option here or perhaps Ford’s 5.0L V8. It already feels and looks old. It’s actually a 5 year old design that’s “new to the US market. Only one powertrain option, but it’s a pretty good one: a turbocharged 4 cylinder. It does have all the new Ford infotainment packages, which puts it ahead of Toyota and Nissan in the tech department. It should make Ford loyalists happy, as they’ve gone without a new Ranger to buy for almost 10 years.
Nissan Frontier - Ancient design that has been around since George W Bush was president. Solid reliability and cheap. Feels like Nissan is phoning it in lately. The 4.0L V6 and 5 speed auto are lethargic and rough sounding. It’s easily the worst engine option available in any mid sized truck, but it’s pretty powerful and can tow pretty well.
What should make the short list?

I love mid size trucks. No desire to ever go any bigger.

If I was buying one it would be a Taco.
The last time we were in Hawaii my wife asked one of the locals why they "all" drove Tacos and his reply was pithy and so very true: "Its because they have the FE engine which means it runs "Fo Eva".

I've had the frontier since 2012. Disagree about the engine after driving a Tacoma and Ridgeline. Has plenty of power and plenty reliable.

I'm a loyal Tacoma owner. Wouldn't buy anything else.

I recently bought a Ridgeline after test driving all of these trucks.
It is perfect for me - good gas mileage, good road manners, extremely comfortable, Honda reliability (presumably), with a truck bed for the occasional thing to be put there. Only negative is slightly underwhelming looks.
Taco was second, just too uncomfortable on the road with poorer gas mileage and less features that I wanted. Looks the best though.

Personal favorite is the Tacoma. Would also drive the Colorado or Ranger. Frontier isn't for me. Ridgeline and Gladiator look like abortions.

Colorado or Gladiator.
Specially the Colorado ZR2 turbodiesel or the Gladiator Rubicon.

Gladiator prolly gets a lot of hate but they look pretty cool in person

I have two Canyons (the GMC Colorado variant) in our fleet.
They will be the last two we ever have.
Lots of interior & system electrical issues with both, A/C compressors with both, mileage is close to a full-size truck.
First Taco
Then everything else.
Then Nissan
The Gladiator is a niche vehicle, in my opinion.

You can't put bumper nuts on any of those trucks

Frontier 4x4 would be my go-to if I wanted something affordable that I knew would have to take a beating.
I actually love the Gladiator, but I feel like it needs a shorter wheelbase. It’s more of a lifestyle vehicle than the others.

I was a looking briefly at a Toyota Tacoma, really liked them along with the Tundra's, but I'm so glad I went with my full size truck
The only thing I regret is the gas milage

I honestly consider 4Runner a mid-sized truck. Better yet, I'd put it at the top of this list.
IMO, a bed makes it a pickup, not a truck.

Gladiator with 2 inch lift and 35s make it look a lot better.

I am a fan on the Chevy Colorado Bison Edition but if I just wanted a mid size truck I would probably go with the Tacoma since has been the gold standard of mid size trucks for a decade or more
