Superbowl XLII was on that night, and Eli beat the Pats
I was in high school and remember running from spot to spot trying to find a tv. Bacchus was running. Finally got a TV and saw "the catch" with Tyree. What a night.
Across the street from Touro Synagogue, a house had a huge sheet draped across the front and a projector on a ladder on the sidewalk. The crowd was huge and no one watched the parade.

Not sure about the King Cakes in Mobile, but now that Rouse's has stores across the Gulf South I would wager that yes, they are similar.
Went to Mobile a few years ago, I had friends who lived there. It was more than enjoyable. Like New Orleans, got out to the route early, had snacks, lit cigars and waited for the parades. There are some long-standing traditions with their societies, too.
Remember the episode of Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe when he visited the den of the Knights of Revelry in Mobile? The "king" I guess he is, bangs these inflated bladders (real) on the float and does all kinds of antics up there, then throws them. They are prized by collectors and Mardi Gras mavens. My buddy wanted one, badly, and he's in Conde Cavaliers.

I've always wanted to experience the Mamou thing, but for now I'll put in my vote for NOLA. Was born and raised there and have yet to miss a mardi gras. Got to ride endymion one year and I swear that is what it's like to be a rock star. 6 straight hours of pounding beers, whiskey, everyone screaming for you and occasional titties. To make it better it was one of the years that endymion had to parade behind Bacchus so it was superkrewe of all super krewes and the crowd was perpetually 15-20 deep. I don't think I'll ever be thatg high again

ETA: rode Endymion and Bacchus back to back twice. Took off 10 years of my life
I rode in Mobile Krewe of Columbus, Endymion, Bacchus in 2000. I must have been drunk when I decided to do it. My Liver took years to recover

Can't be beat. Best $20 I ever spent.

Similar thing happened down Napoleon Avenue. The difference was someone brought out a TV and a generator and basically mounted it on an oak tree in front of St. Stephen's Church. LMAO

Just became an easy and cheap throw for the parades. Dates back to the 50's.
As for more Mobile Mardi Gras history, there is a documentary, Order of Myths you can watch.
Here is a show from Alabama Public Television with a full episode on: Joe Cain Day.
Joe Cain was a Civil War vet who brought back Mardi Gras in Mobile in 1868 after the South fell.

Just watching I'd rank
1. Nola uptown on Sunday
2. Eunice/Mamou on Tuesday
3. Church point on Sunday
4. Lafayette on Sat or Tuesday
Riding on a float I'd rank
1. Pecan Island before they shut it down after Rita
2. Eunice - especially 10-15 years ago when it was on the old route and really wild
3. Nola - but only have ridden orpheus
4. Lafayette - bonaparte or rio

Been to mardi gras in eunice, saw a parade and went to a ball in mobile, and have been to parades in NOLA inlcuding riding in Bacchus all my life. Chasing chickens was a blast and the boudin halfway through the parade route was so good. Knowing the history of why it was done, watching the Captain ride out with a chicken is cool to see. Even been to the Mamou street dance. Mobile has a decent parade. I would rank it like single A baseball compared to the major leagues in New Orleans. You can't really compare mardi gras in cajun country. It's just different.
My personal rankings would be
1) New Orleans
2)Mardi Gras in Eunice
3) Mobile

Bogalusa - the only Mardi Gras where I’ve seen female float riders throw panties. Luckily they were not used ones.
