Seems weird doesn’t it?

In most situations, you'd be arrested and the cops would let them back in.

Wrong. Zero chance of getting arrested. Claim I never touched them.

Wrong again. Squatter has no money. I lock the door, lights off. Nobody home when cops show up. Squatter is a loon.

Squatter has zero rights if they try that with me. I would drag them out by their hair. Or they leave at gun point but I'm taking their phone from them first. You want to squat no problem, good luck in life. I'm taking your possessions and kicking you out.

Right now we have squatters living in homes they don’t own or pay for until the civil process completes.

SFP: “we can’t have cops making judgements that impact what happens until the civil process completes..:even though they make judgements in all other complaints. “

Yes, it sucks. And states that don't provide for quick evictions are shitting on citizens. But due process is important.

Beat cops don't make charging decisions unless it's the easiest of cases.

And detectives often don't make any final decisions and just send reports to the prosecutors to make the call (or do a grand jury and let them make the call).

The last thing you want in this world is to give beat cops more authority over your life, and have to think. They're bad enough as it is.

0 chance?

A homeowner in New York found themselves removed from property they own and placed under arrest after changing the locks when they found people that they did not know occupying the home.

Now, was the squatter charged eventually? Yes, but that baw still got arrested.

Trespassing...beat cop able to handle.

Domestic disturbance...no problem.

Burglary. no issue.

Squatting? Way too complicated, the cop has no ability to read a document and handle the complaint. We must rely on the bureaucracy of a system that favors the person with nothing to lose in said system.

There's the problem. You think that would happen in Louisiana or Arkansas? It wouldn't. 0 chance of me getting arrested. Maybe if I killed them but then again I'd have time to stage my innocence.

Because there are a few hundred years of common law and statutory law in numerous jurisdictions that say it’s not. That’s why.

I get that a lot of you don’t like it, and I understand that many jurisdictions arguably extend too many protections to tenants, but that’s the way it works. A beat cop just does not have that authority, nor do I think they should.

I don’t mind that they don’t have that authority, but I am surprised.

Just seems like a very straight forward situation to handle.

You don’t seem to realize that SFP is explaining the process on this thread. He isn’t arguing with you about how easy it would be to use logic to settle squatting situations. He’s actually said he agrees with you in principle, but is just explaining why the scenarios you are presenting don’t work (legally). But it seems to be going right over your head.

Are you retarded?

I watched a lot of this when it was uploaded. The end with SJC chasing her around town in his underwear and she seeks shelter at some Mexican place is fricking hilarious.

Oh I totally get why people hate SFP. I don’t, and have known him for decades now, but I get why he rubs people the wrong way (usually intentionally).

But all he’s really doing in this thread is explaining what happens in reality in some squatter cases. But then you have comments like this:
quote:

Squatters have no rights in my eyes.

I’d venture to say that almost everyone in the thread agrees with this in principle. But in reality it’s just not true. Unfortunately some places have absolutely ridiculous and stupid squatter laws and people have learned how to use and abuse them to their whim. That’s an inarguable fact, as we see stories pop up all the time about it.

So, millions of undocumented illegal aliens are claiming squatters rights in the US?

Got it.
