There was a farmer in my high school hometown that had a wooden leg - he had lost his leg in a static hay baling machine (for the non-farmers, the hay went to the baler rather than as it is today where the baler goes to the hay).

Years later, his arm is jammed in a hay baler and it is slowly pulling him into the baler. Staring death in the face, he was able to remove his prosthetic leg and throw it into the baler. The baler jammed, saving his life but not his arm.

I carry a sharp knife, but I don’t think I could do it.

Did y’all read the article? The bottom part of his leg was gone no matter what. He cut an inch of tissue that was connected to free himself from the machine. Terrible but it’s not like he hacked his leg off like the hiker who cut his arm off through the bone after getting trapped under a rock about 15 years ago.

True. This was in the 80's so I should have said "prosthetic leg."

I was younger than I thought when this happened. I believe it was 1973 or 74. When I googled the town and some search terms, a local paper popped up but I'm not going to pay to see it.

Dude seriously needed to just sell his hay equipment and buy his bales from someone else. Lol

Several yrs ago a hiker did same with his arm. He got it trapped in between two boulders somehow and he was out in nowhere and he knew his choice was die or cut his arm off. The hiker was going solo so nobody was going to come after him and he was way off the beaten path. Somewhere out west I believe.

Having unwrapped peoples arms from machine shop machines (2), freed people from augers and other farm machinery (4), I think this course of action would be preferable.
