BATON ROUGE - A jury awarded the family of Max Gruver, an 18-year-old LSU freshman who died of alcohol poisoning less than 12 hours after a Phi Delta Theta hazing incident, was awarded $6.1 million in damages for their son's death, according to The Advocate.

The newspaper reported that Gruver's parents, Stephen and Rae Ann Gruver, won their wrongful death lawsuit Wednesday.

The panel of five men and three women decided Gruver's parents should receive $6 million for their son's death and another $100,000 for the pain Gruver suffered during and after the fraternity's hazing.

Gruver participated in Phi Delta Theta's "Bible Study" event, a hazing ritual in which fraternity members would quiz pledges on the history of the fraternity and force them to drink high-volume alcohol known as Diesel when they answered incorrectly, The Advocate said. An affidavit showed that Gruver was unfairly targeted during the event.

Gruver had a blood-alcohol level of .495 when he died. “This definitely sends a message to would-be hazers across the country to take pause and think about what you’re doing,” Gruver’s father, Stephen, said outside the courtroom moments after the verdict, according to The Advocate. “Think about the dangers of hazing, think about how it can harm people and how you’ll be held accountable.”

I've wondered this exact thing, and sadly...probably from no one but you can bet your arse that attorney will put it on a billboard.

That's what I want to know as well. Only deep pocket indirectly is LSU, can't see how Phi Delta Zeta has that amount without filing bankruptcy, maybe their liability policy.

Surely both. But the article should have pointed that out, which of course it did not.

The jury found Isto was 2% at fault for Gruver's death, which means the family will receive roughly $122,000 after the trial, in addition to the settlements they reached. It's not clear what those amounts are; in December, the plaintiffs struck an $875,000 settlement with LSU, a university spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.

From the embedded advocate article.

The Gruvers sued LSU, Phi Delta Theta, and multiple fraternity members over their sons death. By the time of the civil trial this week, they had reached settlements with all defendants accept fraternity member Ryan Matthew Isto and his insurance company.

Just absolutely atrocious reporting. 6.1 mil awarded and they don’t take the time to tell you from which entity/institution. BR media is a joke.

Wonder if Ben Wynne's family sued, and if so, what they got?

You never haze with alcohol. The no drinking was the punishment.

But Gruver participated so he should hold responsibility as well.

Good.

Hazing is nothing more than bullying and is repulsive. I always ran with popular crowds dating back to high school and not once did I bully the weak or condone it of my friends. Sociopaths do that shite.

So Gruver is a sociopath since he also participated?

Sad story, but any script writers of 1980s fraternity and ski movies that didn’t think of the name Max Gruver were not focused.

You'd be amazed at the self-destructive steps someone will take to be accepted or fit in.
