Security Purposes translation
Facebook will use whatever data they can illegally harvest to make themselves financially secure.

I must be "social media" stupid because I don't understand this.
How can Facebook track anything I am doing if I am not a member and I never go on their website?
Did they pay off my internet subscriber to track me?

If you've legitimately never been to their site, they don't know anything about you.
However, if you've been to their site, even without a username, they track you via your IP address and cookies. They don't know anything about you other than generic data, like where you visit and what you search, but that information eventually paints a pretty big picture of you.
It's also possible other sites share your information with FB, even if you've never been there.

Let's say someone in your circle of friends or family has a facebook account. As a part of signing up they link this persons contacts and contact info (address, phone number, photos, email, etc) with known facebook accounts. If there is no account this info is used to create a new profile. Once created this profile is added to using data mining, & cookies from websites affiliated facebook are used to track your location, browsing history, and other information that can be gleaned.
All of this info is then compiled into a profile that is sold to companies for the highest price possible.
The icing on the cake is that because this info came from a 3rd party its no privy to any sort of 4th amendment privacy privelege.

I do not have a facebook account, but have my text messages "liked" sometimes by some of my contacts. It ticks me off when I think I am responding to only them and they "like" my response. It just means I must be connected to Facebook somehow.

We are all product.
...and shite like this is why it blows my mind that everyone freaked the hell out about Net Neutrality, but not a peep about Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc. hoovering every single thing you do online 24/7 and selling it to the highest bidder.
Hell this is just the stuff Zuck admitted to. Think about all the crap they're doing that they're not telling you.

Or just owning a smart phone. I was playing Battlefield 1 recently and if you are a German the character yells out random phrases in German. The next day I had Germany tourism ads all over sites on my phone.

My company, along with many other websites, starts building a profile for you as soon as you visit our site for the first time. If you end up buying something from us, we connect your information to your account.
