re: Facebook is a toxic waste dump, and I am quitting it.

I got on facebook in 2009. A lot of friends and family were on it, and frankly I was sort of blown away by the ability to instantly connect with people I haven't seen in 20 or 30 years. Awesome! But wait... It didn't take long to realize that I didn't miss most of those people, and I could go another 20 years without ever hearing from them. (FB has killed class reunions for that very reason.) I certainly don't care about the mundane details about people's kids or how much they love Jesus. Most of the people I used to commiserate with have drifted away. I am basically left with a screen littered with the sad lives of a bunch of people I couldn't give two shits about. Anybody else just walk away from it? Social media is accelerating the demise of civilization.
I agree with every single word!

Sad, but so very true.

Can it be permanently deleted? I can deactivate, but it always give you the option to sign back in.

I'll always maintain my Facebook account just so I know about birthdays. Otherwise I'm rarely active on it. My friends aren't active anymore either. It's like the same core group of 15 folks who post ten times a day about politics or their kids.

I've entered the part of life where college and HS Friends are posting pictures of their kids in Halloween costumes instead of slutty girls in a Halloween costumes.
Be patient. Eventually their kids will start wearing slutty Halloween costumes.

My favorite are the memes with quotes attributed to people that never said those words.

Welcome to becoming a mature adult

An app you elect to use at your own discretion can't control you - you control it. You can decide who to follow, who follows you, etc. You can log in when you want, if you want, and log out when you want. Amazing process. Crazy how that shite works. This is like someone saying having a credit card made them go bankrupt. Grow the frick up and be an adult. This country is becoming overrun with pussies...and not the good kind.

Life goes in cycles. The old silver hair CEOs are getting hooked on it, so they think the middle aged workforce should be "looking into it", so they change their hiring practices to hire people on it all day.

I basically use it as a Rolodex. Haven't posted a status update in years.

i did... best decision i've made in a while... all the political shite was just infuriating, so i had to... i lost so much respect for family members, even my parents... when my mom un-friended me, that was when i knew it was time to get out ...

Best part about Facebook was when a husband would post about how great his wife is. Wife responds saying how lucky she is to have him. He responds. No one else responds but they get 36 awkward likes.

I've never had a FB account. No male "old silver hair CEOs" who I know have said anything remotely supportive about FB or that they use it at all, much less to hire people on it. The only related conversation about FB has been that now firms have to have and monitor social media policies now and that's a PITA.

I only post when I have a 10" + turd in the bowl.

This one girl on there melted so hard during the election.
She said she was terrified for the future of the United States under Trump.
She stayed home from work for 3 days in a deep depression.
I hope it was all hyperbole but I doubt it.

Somehow I don't think FB is the problem

I've never understood the people that get all excited about quitting Facebook.
I open it up once or twice a day to see if anything interesting was posted. Sometimes I don't open it for a number of days. nice to see some stuff from people I went to high school with 20 years ago. Kids and such.
But it always makes me laugh when people come here celebrating quitting Facebook.

I got on it in 2006 and got off of it in 2007. It's for posers and losers.

Seems like a legitimate topic to me rather than more social media drama.

I only have about 175 FB friends and out of that they're about 20 I actually give a damn about. Half of them I've met through FB so it hasn't been a total waste. I've a lot of people on "hide" that I never see their posts and I still have to wade through a bunch of useless memes and boring crap.
Mixed bag for me.
Mixed bag for me.

I like that it eliminated the need to buy birthday cards.
