FB used to be a decent social media platform that you could use to stay connected with people and keep up to date on your friends' lives.
But they weren't satisfied with being the #1 social media platform. They wanted to be the #1 video and image host, news provider, game host, etc.
Status updates used to directly pertain to the person posting. Now it's all "shared" content that has nothing to do with the person. "Hey I liked this article now you have to look at it in your feed."
I've barely used it the last few years and quit completely sometime in 2016. The messenger app is worth keeping to stay in contact with certain friends but FB itself is worse than worthless.

My friends deserve a phone call if I want to "converse" with them. My acquaintances, I'll see them at the next class reunion or a ball game, at church, etc.

FB has killed class reunions for that very reason.)
Absolutely right. I quit long ago for that reason. In a graduation class of 500 we had about 10 people sign up for our 20 year reunion. It got cancelled. No need for a reunion when you know everyone's life story through Facebook already. Not to mention people believing everything that is posted on there.

Yeah but you can't get drunk with them over the phone. I enjoy getting tore down in person. More fun that way.

Facebook is great for people like me who don't have real friends.

What is the O-T?

They are mainly friends who live overseas so it's just more feasible to leave a message than try to catch each other on the phone.

Facebook is full of fake news and cat ladies!

I've never been on it before and don't know how it works but I genuinely don't like other people so I could really couldn't give a shite less.

Use it the way it was intended: to connect with lonely girls and for your Tinder/Bumble profiles.

Loveit/hateit. When I got on FB, it was a simpler time. I was trusting, naive, and thought it would be cool to stay in touch with people all over the place in this scattered culture we live in today. So I played the game and gave them all kinds of info about me - photos, my preference, background, address, friends, family, etc. Seemed innocent enough... at the time.
Years passed and it became a useful tool for staying in contact with our far-away kids in far away places. And Messenger seemed like a cool idea, where texting was seemingly so "yesterday" for some stupid reason. And why bother with Skype when Facetime is right there. Anyway, I was still all-in.
I now know it was all a trap. As updates come and FB knows more and more about me and my friends and family, as they feed me more and more ads I don't ask for or want, and give me no real way to eliminate such things from popping up all the time, and suggested posts and "memories" I'd rather not be reminded to remember, privacy policies that are always changing and obscured by verbage that says nothing, and etc. and etc. Ad infinitum.
I want out. I want to erase, delete, obliterate any and all things I've ever said or done or added to FB.
But I'm scared. What if nobody likes me anymore. What if I am forgotten? What if...
One day I'll say, "So what?" Coming soon.

The olds are discovering Instagram now, and kids are looking for the next new thing to escape Aunt Martha's prying eyes.

One of the "olds" here. I have an instagram account but I don't use it. If I leave FB am not so sure I want another entanglement.

I got on facebook for the first time in two years the day after the election. Holy meltdown

It's what eventually drove me away, although I was trending in that direction before. Both sides were about equally obnoxious. After I had unfollowed a good 25% of my "friends," I finally decided what's the point. I found out I genuinely did not like a lot of these people after all, and some of them I had considered close friends at one time in my life. Some of them were relatives.
I'm fine with people expressing opinions, including those that differ from my own, as long as they're original and well-reasoned. I don't have time for diatribes and stupid reposted memes. I can get that stuff here without thinking less of someone I know IRL
