So stupid that companies refuse to cut dividends. They will borrow money to pay a dividend.

Management’s number one priority is to enhance shareholder value.

Doing their best to keep the stock price from dropping even further.

Keeping the cash would add more value than giving it away in a tax inefficient manner.

Cutting dividends likely means a massive dump of shares to the market. Which would destroy the employees planning to retire in next couple years.

It’s a lose lose situation when the market is shite. We should all direct our anger at the govt response to covid before we direct it at our employers

market reacted positively to BP cutting theirs.
Investors need to realize that cutting the dividend is good for the long term health of the company.
Now obviously if you're in retirement and invest for the income, then yeah a cut doesn't help you.

I think the economy is going to go into a massive tailspin on the back of (1) rampant unemployment (2) inflation, (3) high amounts of debt with student loan debt being the most precarious, and (4) stock market bubble popping because of overvalued stocks because of everyone investing hardcore due to fears of the inflation

I think whenever we finally end these inane lockdown measures, we will finally feel the true pain of our COVID response in the form of a severe economic depression. But it’s a storm we are going to have e to weather to get back to normal. It seems just about inevitable at this point.

Exactly. It cracks me up when threads like this come along and people have no clue about how publicly traded companies operate or where the profits go.

They are going to add it back when the economy turns around. Saving the company about 500 million. It was this or start pretty big layoffs.

I would welcome a 401k or paycut over a lay-off.

All that link tells me is that they are cutting underperformers, and apparently trying to avoid the PR from formal “layoffs”.

I still don’t understand what rules are being broken here?

I saw that, but that generally isn't the norm. BP said that they cut theirs to ramp up investing in renewable energy. While that my be true, they are also trying to put a positive spin on their weakening financial position.

It definitely can be if it mean that it results in an increase in RE. But clearly that isn't the case as they reported a massive loss for the quarter, and more losses to come as the year continues.

It remains to be seen if their investment in renewable energy will pay off, but in the short term a dividend cut combined with massive losses doesn't look good.

When I think of Exxon shareholders, my first thought is of all the ex-employees that own stock in the company.
