I get the sentiment here because I hate people milking the system too, but serious question- how is a person supposed to interview for an actual job if they’re forced to pick up trash or sit in a noisy room all day?

Employment offices have computers and staff that help you create a job profile (ie a resume). Your resume goes into a system. You can instantly see who matches and try to get an interview, or they can reach out to you. If you have a job interview, you don't have to show up. You have to prove you interviewed to get paid, though. They teach you how to job search, how to interview, how to act... the works. But people don't give a shite, they just want their check.

They used to require proof, but now it's so simple you don't really have to do much.

Networking events are staffed by volunteers that either just want to help, or are fulfilling an obligation as part of THEIR unemployment. Even unemployed people can help with resumes, connections, etc.

Sitting in a room waiting to sort trash is mostly for the true pieces of shite, so they can't be at home drinkin' and scratching lotto tickets.

John Bel has made this state the least popular state in the Union.

You can make money at home doing things on the internet. Ebay, Only Fans, whatever. Most people don't make a lot of money doing this. Most jobs don't pay a whole hell of a lot either. You can either sit at home on your computer and be poor, or go flip burgers at Burger King and be poor. Which would you choose?

The fact is the get up off the couch price has gotten higher especially since the pandemic. Companies are just going to have to pay people more money, or they just won't have people

This is more than likely a major contributor in addition to brain drain and just people leaving the state in general. Louisiana is horribly run and corrupt and it's not getting any better.

We have made life entirely too comfortable for those without a job.

In fact, life for a person making 15 dollars an hour and life for a person sitting home getting benefits is the same except the lazy person sitting at home doesn’t have to work.

This is a nice sound bite for conservative media but what substantive evidence is there for this? If this is true, then the problem isn't necessarily government programs, it's wages. We've had a bull market since ~2010 and wages mostly stayed stagnant, asset prices (notably real estate) inflated but largely not wages until the last couple of years as people stopped working because wages haven't kept up with prices of everything else.

eta

One spot where these ideas intersect is that many low-wage employers, like Walmart, are enabled to keep wages low simply because their employees can also survive by both the low wages they receive for their work and by getting government benefits. People hadn't been revolting/leaving en masse at least partially because of this.

Many moons ago, I was laid off while working in Seattle.

Unemployment was almost $800 PER WEEK! I had to show up once to an office, but even then all I ever had to do was call a number and push 1 to say I had interviewed that week. That's it.

If a person has no dignity, you could certainly just milk the system for as long as they let you.

I am okay with a safety net, but there need to be controls in place to prevent abuse, deter REPEATED use of the safety net, but also create an atmosphere that if you want to live, you need to work. Benefits should support basic existence for a brief period of time. Benefits should not exceed minimally acceptable wages available.

How can a person go for a year on benefits, when there are not only literally thousands of entry level jobs out there, but thousands and thousands of municipal tasks that need to be done that are often neglected.

Sweep sidewalks
sort garbage & recycling
pull weeds / gardening
clean parking lots and decks
vacuum buildings
empty trash cans
wash vehicles
clean vehicles
wash windows
pick up litter
clean up playgrounds
painting
organize storage closets
And others based on skill... plumbing, sheetrock work, other repairs
Childcare (if they have experience) for gubment employees

Half of those are welders who quit where they are working to go to the next yard for 10 cents more an hour.

He really has been a shitty, do nothing governor but people who voted for him won't admit it. They'll just blame Jindal.

The absolute worst thing for LA is to maintain the status quo, unless you are an ambulance chaser I guess.

Or we can do like some Indonesian tribes and hang the person who sits on unemployment for over 6 weeks. It seems to be effective.

Drugs, prostitution, only fans, etc are more profitable and require less work without a boss.

How many of these jobs are actual skilled labor, fair salaried jobs vs dogshit service industry jobs? Even with a LCOL, no one gives a frick about making 10 an hour.

Make trade school affordable again and maybe you'll retain skilled labor in this state.

Also, an outflux of people moving to every other state in the south besides us will do that.

As a business owner I can 100% attest to this. My $18 hour employees in 2018 are now making $26. Some clients have complained about the increase in fees but most understand it’s the nature of the current climate.

We constantly struggle to find people to hire. The govt makes it easy to stay home. They just show they are trying/pretending to get hired by setting up an interview and you will get some money. They set up interviews and don't show up and say they weren't hired (keep getting money). One out of 10 show up for interviews, think about that statement. You think they want to work????? No way.

It absolutely can be done. But most will not have the hustle required, because its a grind The ones that can are impressive
