Then he should use two characters instead of three and group the pivot table appropriately as needed. Although I am guessing this will go right over his had since they don't even have a very basic understanding of excel.
I understood that. My question was won't I need to do a search for each unique abbrev/word in A (not each instance of that word but a search for each unique word). There are hundreds of different words in A.

There's an excel guru from the Money forum that will probably be looking for a new job soon. Hit him up, he'll probably be working at your nearest McDonalds

It is pretty hard without having your data or exactly what your end result needs to be.

How many different abbreviations do you need total results for?

I imagine something like this would be the end result.

You can then take the data field out to make it cleaner.

OP..you could ask (or pay) somebody to do this and they could have it competed for you in about 10 minutes. What you want is simple but only you have the data to filter and know what you want.

Just email me the file along with the id/pin to your PayPal account and I get this to you within the hour.

Just create an abbreviation column with the left formula in a new column and pivot the whole data range.

My last post with pictures will work whether you need 5 abbreviations or 500.

The pivot table will do 99% of the work for you. Those values under total will equate to the summation off all results that start with ax, bh, dB, etc in your data set

Pivot table is the answer but if sorted on column A, and IF statement can be used to sum column B when A changes to the next new value.

When yall stop pussy pivoting around in Excel, he can email me his data sets and I'll write a quick sql cursor to feed column A every possible abbreviation and spit out the grouped and summed totals(he will swallow) back in Excel.

Sort the column in question and it will place all cells with like characters next to each other

And then...?

Add subtotal for every change in column A.

Read the edit. I am actually a very experienced analyst and dba.

I could do this shite in my sleep using SQL but accountants and sales dorks get cute and try to do everything in Excel pivot tables.

Sort on column A then use summation on cllum b.... That would be easiest.

Or you could get in to some if-then statements. But that seems unattainable for you.
