Because she filed our taxes in2014 and we split right before it kept the refund and is now asking me to pay because she was audited. We’ve both remarried and I don’t care. What could she do now? Not worried about the irs just want nothing to do with her.
Tell her that if she bones you you’ll give her half.

I could of before this but my wife now and daughter are more important than her although I like your direction in this.

No. I didn’t get anything she did. Now they want her to pay some back.

I think your story is bullshite, but if it was a joint return and there is a liability the IRS can collect from either of you unless there is an innocent spouse claim. It doesn’t matter what your ex-wife thinks.

If she got the full refund and they are trying to claw it back, she can fricking pay the difference.
Posted on 2/27/20 at 12:23 pm to GeauxtigersMs36
She filed the taxes.
She took the refund.
She owes the money.
Only thing you should do is prepare for an innocent spouse scenario.

Did y’all file jointly the year she whacked your taxes? If not tell her to get fricked

Make sure the refund wasn't direct deposited into a joint account. If so you might be screwed. Did the return have your name on it? If no, then they will go after her if she is the one that cashed it or received the deposit into her account. If that is the case, tell her to go pound sand.

I can't imagine the mess my life would be in if this were to happen to me and I decided to go to a message board for advice.

Tell her if she wants any money she needs to be ready for a threesome.

Might want to check the stature of limitations there cowboy with respect to audit of a federal return. That is depending on the type of audit.

You signed the return therefore you are also responsible. Your burden will be half of what is owed (less your half of the refund)
Posted on 2/27/20 at 12:31 pm to GeauxtigersMs36
To clarify, who kept the refund?
Posted on 2/27/20 at 12:36 pm to GeauxtigersMs36
Did you jointly file? If so, then you and her are both fully responsible for the amount owed. Who got the refund doesn't matter. IRS gives zero fricks about your property settlements in these situations.
You can tell her to get bent, but if it's a legit IRS situation, then they can come after you for the whole amount, or whatever she doesn't pay if she pays some of it. They can go after her for the whole amount as well.
IRS generally doesn't audit 5-6 years later, unless fraud, but, this could be a situation where they audited you years ago (or did a matching issue audit), assessed the tax, and are just now getting around to collecting it. But... you should have been aware of this by now, from getting letters and having refunds taken.

Get a friend to do it, same rules apply

I read that as she owes not you owe. Sucks to be her great to be you.

A simple "frick Off" should do the trick.
Posted on 2/27/20 at 12:47 pm to GeauxtigersMs36
She is probably lying. 2014 is too far back for the IRS to audit now for basic compliance. Don't so shite until the IRS mails YOU a letter.
