Keep in mind these are the same parents that wanted him to only get probation because he hadn't been convicted of another crime before then (no telling what they got him out of before that) AND wanted him to be able to "educate others on college campuses" over what can happen.

While first and second degree murder are both atrocious, there is a palpable difference between the two, and so should the punishments. It's no different here. NO ONE is suggesting there shouldn't be punishment. Simply, there should be SOME degree of difference between the punishments for these two distinct crimes. I don't know how one could argue differently.

Otherwise, we might as well say that if you hadn't jaywalked, you wouldn't be getting waterboarded--think twice. While similar, these two things are not QUITE the same. That's all.

Simply don't spit on someone and you won't be thrown in jail for life. Like I said to someone else, these crimes are similar, not the same. The punishment, therefore, should be similar but not identical. We used to put one category of offenders TO DEATH. There is a difference which should be reflected in the punishment, however slight, is all I am saying.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I do think there should be different levels but I also believe that prisons should be so horrible that no one would ever want to go there. Just my 2 cents.
