Working in the " writing lab" at a college with some Swedish athletes will prove they write better as well. Was a waste of time for them to be there, but " english as a second language" and all...

The main reason is laziness. Contractions are another example. You very rarely hear or see “he’s, you’re, we’ve”.

That’s because they learn the language formally.

Americans take English but we mostly learn to speak it colloquially.

12 years of mandated education in one's native language is just simply inadequate. We need more funding for more classes with these heroes teaching English!
