I never felt so inadequate for being monolingual as the time I met an incredibly beautiful young woman at a party after a concert (a true OT10). I noticed the slightest hint of an accent in her English. Then a concert violinist named Anastasia, who I knew to be Russian, joined us and the two of them conversed, obviously in Russian. Then a Chinese woman said hello, and the two proceeded to carry on a conversation in Chinese. The beautiful young woman speaks seven languages fluently. She said she had lost count of the number of men who had asked for her hand in marriage.

I've had the same exp with the Dutch. Awesome people
First thing I thought of when I read this thread.

Dutch folks usually also speak German as well and many speak Frisian (which is in-between Dutch & English).

Belgium peeps got it going on. There are four native tongues for folks there: French, Dutch, Flemish, and German.

Many folks there speak at least three of those plus English.

And Belgium is the origin of this hero of Amurkin kulcha...

Danes also speak English well. For them they all take it because it is generally everybody's second language in Europe, so they can talk to other people. At least it was that way 20 years ago.

Pretty sure the American-English language will shift to kids actually being taught Ebonics in school.

The amount of people with college degrees that use “then” in place of “than” is disturbing

This one is amazing to me. I feel like half my posts on td are correcting people that get them wrong.

The real craziness is when they use "than" instead of "then".

I am also impressed by the young singer Angelina Jordan Astar, who at the age of 8 performed primarily in English, but was fluent in her native Norwegian, Swedish (father), and Farsi (mother) as well as English, and at least some Japanese (grandparent, there is video of her singing in Japanese).

I find myself passively correcting bad grammar. I met a customer and his assistant yesterday. During introductions the assistant said her name as “Blinda” so I asked is it “Blinda” as in blender or “Belinda”? She said Belinda.

If you can’t your own name correctly the rest of our conversation is going to be a waste of my time.

I believe they are required to take 5 languages in Public high school. Americans can’t even learn English in public school. Sad
