I wouldn’t call it an epiphany. I wasn’t in any kind of pain, no blood in my stool. I just had constant constipation and decided I couldn’t just live on laxatives. I only had issues for a few weeks before getting scoped. My oncologist told me the tumor had likely been growing for a few years at that point. Colorectal can go almost completely undetected until later stages, especially for younger people who aren’t doing scopes yet.

Use an independent imaging service like Green Imaging. They find unused slots at MRI/CT/Ultrasound providers due to cancellations, etc. and typically charge 20% of what Memorial Hermann scammed me for. I paid under $200 per ultrasound (heart, torso, legs, etc.)
It's not being cheap that will kill you, it's not shopping around that will.
ETA: All you have to do is ask your doctor for the doctor's order (1 pager on what imaging they want,) and text or email it to Green. They'll ask for your location and preferred scheduling. Pay Green, they send you a voucher you print. Show up, get scanned. Done.

My dad is 62 and has been to the doctor one time in his entire life for a kidney infection in his 20s. He refuses to go I don’t know why

I am sure it happens every day at every pharmacy. I have been taking a particular medication twice per day for nearly 10 years. In that time, there has been a $10 copay every single month. This month the cost inexplicably jumped to $980. I am lucky enough to be able to afford these meds, but a whole lot of people couldn’t touch that.
They would just have to do without.

Yes. Not dead but quickly headed in that direction.

It knocked out the Covid pretty quickly, but its side-effects were as bad as the Covid. The wife couldn't finish the script. There are other things they can prescribe to help folks through it.

The article says medical errors, not medical malpractice. The errors are what kills them, not the malpractice.

An in law of mine once was feeling pretty bad and went to an ER. They told him he’d had a heart attack and needed surgery immediately or he’d die. He didn’t have insurance so he walked out against medical advice.
Next day he was feeling worse. Went to a different hospital ER. Spoiler alert: he died two days later.

But i had an old high school buddy who was cheap.
He was getting married and bought a case of old wedding invitation envelopes.
His fiance', of course, did all of the announcements and invitations.
Susan got toxic shock from licking all of the old invitations. She died in the hospital.

To be honest if I was 91 I would rather have my cause of death be a late surprise then to spend my final years filled with dread and getting poked and poisoned by doctors. Quality of life matters.

I’m cheap so I go to Veterinarians. They cost less and can heal a chicken, a lizard, a snake…..
