Yes, in Istanbul (Constantinople). After 6 days honeymooning in Greece I was looking pretty rough and allowed myself to be coerced into entering a barber shop our first night in Turkey.
Buddy trimmed a bit off the top, straight razored my neck and cheeks, then waxed my ears and nose.
If you've never had your ears waxed, it's the most excruciatingly uncomfortable experience. I thought the nose was going to hurt but no, it felt like he was peeling a layer of skin off of my ears.
My wife was laughing the whole time taking pictures of me. Because dude put a q-tip in each nostril while the wax was still hot then ripped them out one at a time when it cooled. Things looked like fricked up curly paint brushes with black and grey bristles.
He went all out with the hot towels, moisturizer, and cologne. Total was $40 U.S. equivalent but we gave him a $100 for the unforgettable experience.

I almost vomited while reading your post.
I spent way too much time in the sandbox in close proximity to the most unhygienic culture on the planet.

Went to a Pakistani barber shop not far from our old neighbord in Dublin, Ireland, years ago; my wife saw me in the shop, getting out of the chair after my haircut. She parked herself by the shop's front door, but outside, while I shot the shite with the barber for about 10 minutes.
He charged me the Pakistani immigrant rate, which was about a 75% discount from the posted rate. Good guys. Went back many times.

Went to one in NYC. Haircut was cheaper than a Supercuts type place in Louisiana. They also would replace battery watches at the same shop. I thought that was interesting.

Yes, as I lived out of country for a few years. A fade is a fade, man. This was during the 90s.

He’s like a speed haircut guy. Been a couple times. He’s really good

Used to go to Bobby in Westwego back in the day. I think he is still there today. Will clean you up old school straight razor.

Went to one in Metairie. They can definitely cut some straight lines.
To comment on the post above, Sahara is delicious. Cleopatra in Harvey is also delicious as well, and the pita is incredible.

Did he include the head, neck, and shoulder massage after the haircut like they do in the Middle East? If not, you got ripped off.

Oh come now. If you’ve never had a barber who speaks no English hand you a magazine menu of heads that all look like Bollywood movie stars or k-pop singers have you ever really lived? It grows back and they make penicillin. Go exploring.
But joking aside, it really is a travel experience worth doing. Don’t google it. Just see a barbershop, take note, and pop in one day.
