I was working retail during my undergrad and it was Christmas Eve so the busiest day of the year. Guy comes in dressed in a nice suit and wants $1.99 shoelaces and pays with a $100. He gets his change and says oh I have the exact amount after all. Gives me the exact amount and asks for his hundred back. I said you already got your change for the hundred but he starts acting upset and trying to convince me I'm wrong. I swore up and down to the manager that I was right but it was the end of a really long night and there was too much money in the register to count out quickly so she gave him his hundred. Of course the drawer was short a hundred at the end of the night.

That is a damn good scam actually. Even if caught the guy just laughs it off and plays dumb. No chance of being arrested.

Yes years ago while in college, after working shift work I stopped at chase bank on Perkins and a gentleman waited until I finished at the ATM. Gave me a sob story, I needed to bring him to north BR. He gave me his phone number etc. he asked that I give him my mailing address so he could mail me a ck.
Number was disconnected (no one had cell phones back then) - never got that $40.

Hired a painter or attempted to wanted all money upfront- uhh no. Asshat

Happened to my good friend's grandmother as well. Friend was the subject that was in jail. Said he was arrested and in jail somewhere abroad. Poor lady went as far as going to the local Walmarks and getting a money order to send. Don't remember how she was stopped/how it was realized to be a scam.

Very common scam in the retail world. I was change scammed once when I was in high school and worked retail. I kind of knew what was happening, but I was too much of a wuss to say anything because I was so young and thought I'd get in trouble for arguing with a customer. Never again.

This guy I hung out with in high school, went out with on weekends, etc went on to play two years of baseball at ULL. It was soon after he finished his second season he decided to have a card game at his place.

He was never the most trustworthy dude, but it was always small things. He would say he would be somewhere and not show up or tell someone they would help them with something then last minute he would bail out..

So he gets this card game going and it must be 10-11 people playing. He lost all of his money and told everyone he was about to get paid for something so he asked if it was cool if he could get $300 in chips and if he loses it, when everyone cashes in their chips, he would split up the debt between the top two chip holders so that one person wouldn't be without $300. He lost all his money again and borrow more chips, not sure how much.. But he was hosting the card game, at his place. We all played with him before, no problems..

Without telling anyone, the next day he left to go into the Navy. The two people he owed money to was trying to get in contact with him a few days later, when he said he would have the money.. And they found out from his mom that he left the day after we played cards. And that she thought the card game was sort of a "going away" get together.

This is his life now.

BTW, I wasn't one of the two people he owed money to so this isn't really a personal experience.

Common scam. The safest thing to do is pull the drawer and count which they won't wait on. I usually tell them gtfo I know what you are doing

I know a dude who got scammed by some guy who was advertising job openings looking for people to help him install for Direct TV.

Long story short, guy was posting ads looking to hire people to install satellites for Direct TV. This guy, who is actually my cousin, just graduated LSU in ISDS. He has always been kind of naive and for some reason this job caught his attention.

He called the guy, guy wanted to interview him that day. Told him he needed him to start ASAP, but needed to get him the appropriate tools which he would need to pay for, which was $150 upfront. He pays the guy. Two days later it is in the news that a guy scammed over a 100 people in the Baton Rouge area by posting ads looking to hire people claiming he was a contractor for DirectTV and asking them to pay $150 up front for tools.

He told us the day he went "interview" that he got a job with a contractor for DirectTV and had to pay $150. Me and his brother and other people were all like "damn dude, you getting scammed. You never pay money if it is a legit job" And he was all like "whatever, it's legit. The dude was cool as hell".

My mom did by a contractor. Started a kitchen remodel, but didn't have any plans so she couldn't get any bids. Hired this guy from a rec and he started charging her by the hr. Job should have taken ~4 months and at 6 I started asking her questions. She still didn't disclose that she was paying him by the hr. At 7 months he was still tinkering around. My mom finally told me what was going on, and I went and fired him. Hired another guy who had it wrapped up in a month.

Came close. In undergrad I saw a job posting for summer sales job. Met the guy in the union and he does his spiel. What it amounts to is some sort of training to sell encyclopedias door to door in rural areas like Tennessee or Kentucky. They supposedly have "host families" in the areas for you to crash at. After something like a week or 2 training you were sent out to various areas to sell door to door and then at the end of the summer you delivered the books. Of course you were expected to purchase a demo set, the lodging wasn't exactly free, etc... In the middle of the meeting at the union a supposed salesperson from the year before came by and talked it up of course. Whatever red flags and warnings weren't going off before certainly are now. As soon as he talked about it being encyclopedias my suspicions were raised, even though it was about 15 years ago, who in the hell was buying Encyclopedias back then?

Look under the criticism section. Pretty much sums it up. Several universities have banned or attempted to ban Southwestern Company from campus.

When I worked in the French Quarter years ago as a bartender it was a common scam. They would look for a new bartenders and tried to pull it. Never got me though, I had seen the movie Paper Moon as a kid. Another bar scam is the Fire Extinguisher Inspection. 2 guys come into the bar during the afternoon and tell the bartender, usually a woman, they are here to do the inspection. They look at the extinguishers, write on the tag, and tell the bartender it's 30 or 40 bucks. Sounds legit, so bartender does cash payout and they are gone. Who is going to question fire safety? It's a total scam. There is no contract for inspection.

I was 16 years old and wanted beer. Went to local gas station and asked a guy to buy us a case. Gave him $20. He went into the store and walked out. Said they didn't have what we wanted. He said to drive to the gas station on the next block and meet him there. We agreed.

He drove off with our $20.

He was black.
