EVs weigh a shite ton. The roads need to repair

If they don't have to pay than nobody else should either and TX should abolish the gas tax.
Do it. I love taxes being abolished.
I hate new taxes.
But a should not support a tax simply because it will not hurt them. That is a move I would expect from a lib.

EV owners are going to pay the piper in TX.
We pay out of our asses in rosd usage fees at the pump. If you want to drive your electric go kart, and demand charging stations every 350 ft, you're going to pay for it.

They still use the roads, so why should they ride for free?

Just like streaming TV was super cheap before it became the next big thing, it slowly crept up to be the same price or more than cable and satellite. EVs will go the same way. They will fee you to death for not paying into the oil industry and taxes.

The babies have boo-boos that kisses won't fix. They need to see that you have a boo-boo as well.

I think the fee should be doubled.

Unless you drive more than 350 miles

The $200 a year thing isn't an egregious way to offset gasoline taxes but the upfront $400 on top of that makes it seem shady at best.

The problem is $200 is in no way their fair share. The article states the average driver in Texas pays $88 a year in gas tax. How is it even remotely fair to charge EVs owners (most of whom only commute locally) more than double what your typical ICE vehicle owner pays?
Ok so it’s like $100 more, and EVs have been paying nothing until now, right?
How is this a big deal at all?

Well, taxes for road repairs/improvements are typically rolled into state taxes at the pump.
So, adding fees on EV registration is not abhorrent.

$200 a year is equivalent to 19.23 gallons a week. Plus there's an extra $400 fee which is bullshite. You just can't help but make fools outta yourself.
First you came for the EVs and then nobody cared when they came for you. Be against taxes. Abolish the gas tax and charge based on miles if it bothers you that much.

If only there was a solution for this.

Considering they should also be paying a grid upgrade fee, they are getting off light.

EVs weight much more than ICE vehicles of the same class. So an increase in road-use fees seem appropriate.
The heaviness of modern vehicles really is a scourge.

You guys are really leaning into this. A model 3 weighs either 3500 or 4000 lbs depending on its configuration. Slightly more than a BMW 3 series or Honda accord curb weight. It’s not some massive difference. People driving trucks and giant SUVs who don’t need them are doing way more damage to infrastructure than a mid size sedan EV. Y’all have fricking lost it.

This is good news and a long time coming, if EV's are going to be on the road more and more and shoved down our throats.

Have you actually looked into this?
So lets say I want to fix up my business with 30 ev trucks and to help load the trucks I need 10 electric forklifts.
What kind of solar panels am I looking at to charge these bad boys daily?

This is the "pulled rug" reality of the total EV world your betters want.
Glad tx is showing it ahead of time and getting these fricks on record calling their own policies punitive.
Eta:
At the same time, knowing the Republicans are just as authoritarian and shitty as the Dems, this is most likely the basis for a future tax system where you're only allowed EV's.
