There is no way to know that right now. If the design is deemed insufficient, the fix may be quite complicated. You can't just go toss up another beam. That's not how loading works.

Best case scenario is a construction defect that can be repaired.

Unless the beam was too small, the repairs are pretty easy. Connections can be shored, and new connections spliced in. I guess I am assuming that they didn't doing anything completely retarded like like frick with the main vertical beams.

I guess I shouldn't assume, you could be right in the that the construction company could have done something stupid, scene it happen many times and this would make it complicated. I was assuming it was simple connection detail that was messed up.

How do you know the repairs will be easy. If only the frame of the building had been constructed, I could see a simple shoring and strengthening repair being used, but in this case, there is significantly more of the building already in place. Shoring the members in question may be a very difficult and expensive operation.

Project Engineer - $120-$135
Senior Engineer - $150-$175
Principal Engineer - $180-$235

Some ranges of cost depending on firm. Principal Engineer can go higher.

there is already a structural engineering firm hired, for $17,500, to investigate what happened, and the city now wants to pay them more?

Shoring is not complicated. Being able to get to the beam to shore might be an issue but shoring in and of itself is not.

Why do we need a library when we have the internet?

All you need is a router, a tent and some chairs.

Backwoods simpleton attitudes like this are why BR is burning shitehole and so many college graduates leave the state to live in places that actually want to spend money on nice things.

Fair for standard work

Higher because govt work

Even higher because high profile work that is investigating a faulty current condition

17.5k will get you about 175 hours of engineering services on average.

Eta: thats probably too conservative, more like 125 or so hours.

talk about some low bill rates. You getting EIs to do this work? I know I wouldn't.

Delegated design connections usually require submittals with the connection engineer's seal.

Yes. Always.

quote:

If the connections are not detailed by the SEOR, why would they be liable?

Because as the SEOR they have ultimate responsibility for the integrity of the structure.

Typically on a project of this size the shop drawing submittal is a long and arduous process. Every connection is detailed and moment calculations are submitted. Also you’re going to have third party inspections on the welds and moment connections for all the steel.(at least in my experience). So if concerns were raised its highly unlikely it’s got anything to do with negligence.

More than likely this won’t be a huge deal if it even requires anything to fix.

That's exactly what I was getting at. Maybe I didn't explain it with simple enough language. Sorry.

You know, beams that are vertical. Sort of like columns, but vertical beams.
