Find a design online that you/your gf like and print out a picture.

Bring it to KG's Custom Jewelry. He'll get you right for a great price.

My truck has been paid off for 5 years - thank you very much. My ex-wife, on the other hand...

This is an expensive investment that she will hopefully wear forever. I hate the idea of the girl picking out the ring, but I would give her an hour to show you the different types of rings she likes and what she likes about each, with the understanding that you will not talk about rings again until you give her the one YOU picked out for her.

Lab grown is 1/2 the price or less vs natural. No difference visually or chemically.

Going just under a round number for size will save a good amount with no noticeable difference. A 1.87c diamond looks like a 2.00c one.

Don't neglect cut, clarity, and color for size.

If you're going with a gold band, you can go a letter grade or two down for color vs a silver colored setting.

The alternative to that is to get a "cheap" placeholder surprise engagement ring and then just let her pick out the one she really wants. :D

Have you discussed anything besides a diamond? Diamonds are plentiful but expensive. There are other gemstones much more rare and not as expensive. I hear morganite is very popular these days.

Buy the biggest, best looking, cheapest stone you can find. No need to pay for super high quality as long as it looks good from 2 feet away. Think about it. You’ll either keep it forever and value is almost irrelevant or you’ll divorce and she’ll throw it at you or flush it.

Practical tip, don’t buy a deep cut stone as the shallow cut diamonds generally appear larger.

What should I know about platinum vs white gold? They look pretty similar to my untrained eye. Platinum seems to be a bit pricier.

That's the question you should be asking

Forget clarity, go with the highest color grade you can afford. Rounds will be cheaper than Emerald or Princess cuts. Hopefully you can look at several loose (unmounted) diamonds side by side and pick the one with the best color. Congrats.

Play around on Blue Nile. Figure it out from there based on your budget. Buy local.

Have a couple rings "created" on blue nile now based on what she told me she liked. Going to a couple of jewlers tomorrow to see what I can find in person.

Lab grow diamonds are marked with a laser. Can’t be seen with the naked eye

Buy a diamond from a wholesaler, https://www.afishman.com/loose-diamonds.html, take it to the nicest jewelry store in town and pick the designer you like the best, like https://www.jeffcooperdesigns.com/, …have the ring custom made for her ring size and diamond dimensions.

The links are who I used 20+ years ago, but there are many. Don’t frick this up.
