I remember those commercials.

We had World Book encyclopedia, 1987 edition. It was used for school stuff. My folks had that set until they finally moved in 2016 and I put them out on the curb.

I looked mine up because of this thread- was disappointed, Figured it'd be worth a good bit more.

we got a world book set when i was in junior high...but i inherited this two volume encyclopedia from of my uncles when i was in the first grade...yes, two volumes i would pick a topic, greek mythology, for instance...i would look up one god/goddess, then i'd look up each additional reference from the entry of the first one...pretty derpy, i know, but it kept me entertained on rainy days

My grandfather, RIP, used to tell me the story about how he bought these in 15 minutes but took him 3 years to pay off.

40 years later he traded them to a barber for 3 haircuts.

We had American Educator encyclopedia, recommended by one of my teachers.
Also got a yearbook, covering major events of that year, for ten years afterward.

We had a set of Compton's for me and my brother.

My dad had his own set of Britannica and wouldn't let my brother and me use them because he thought we would roach them. Looking back, I have to agree with him...

We had a set that our grandparents bought us. My mom would make us write a report on something of her choosing when we got in trouble. I got in trouble a lot as a kid which helped my trivial pursuit game play later in life.

Parents had a set of World Book when I was a kid, 80s. All the kids on the street would use them for school. It was our internet back then.

Yeah, we had the World Book set back in the 70's. I remember they would send out an annual revision/update each year.

Those were really nicely made.

Maybe 2 decades ago, I picked up an encyclopedia set used at a library sale for $50 total.

We had the Encyclopedia Britannica and World Book sets. I think Dad got the World Book set from a school library that was updating their set, but I know he paid out of pocket for Britannica because he reminded of it constantly.

We had two sets, but not that one. World Book and another. I spent a lot of time in those and credit them for my knowledge of so many mostly useless facts

Delchamps

That's a name I haven't heard in a long while! Grew up on the coast but moved in late 90s.

Delchamps was bought out by Jitney Jungle in the 1990’s at the wrong time as Walmart was expanding into 24 hour supercenters to compete against Delchamps being a 24 hour grocery store. The purchase was so bad that it took Jitney Jungle and Delchamps down at the same time.

In my area of South Lafourche, Delchamps was the go to grocery store before Rouses became the King of Groceries in Southeast Louisiana. They had 2 locations one was near the pre super center Walmart, and the other was near Kmart. When the downfall of Delchamps began the Galliano location closed and the other one in Larose was sold off to Rouses. The Larose location closed after Hurricane Ida damaged the building.

I'm no fan of Wokepedia, particularly in light of their non-stop begging/poor-mouthing for user donations while it was recently leaked they gave $51 million to various left-wing political causes.

However, Wiki is pretty badass for instant updates for objective data for subjects like sports, historical figures/events, music, geography, math, (most) science & medicine, etc. Pretty much anything that isn't vunerable to a subjective political take, which will always lean left. Oh, and it's mobile, in your pocket, at your fingertips.

Encyclopedia Britannica (or any in-print comprehensive reference work) could/would technically be outdated on multiple subjects the very same day you spent multiple $100s or multiple $1000s on the latest version, that takes up half your bookcase.

Don't know about that...but was more attainable. My broke arse momma bought one at a time through some program at Piggly Wiggly.
