And my only point is that SpaceX was the privatization of a tax-payer funded public program that also makes most of its money in government contracts.

But this is false. SpaceX was not funded by the government when it was founded. Their first rockets were entirely funded internally. Elon Musk almost went broke before they successfully had an orbital launch vehicle.

he tax code is fricked. When someone can live off billions in loans backed by that stock and never sell, the tax system allows them to enjoy their wealth without paying taxes like ordinary workers do. I think that should change.

Maybe you should understand how things work for yourself rather than paraphrasing ragebait you read on social media. “Never” is a long time.

While you are right margin loans are open ended, they are NOT transferable.

So if nothing else, they need to be paid off upon death of the owner. Assuming you use the assets in the account to do so(otherwise there is no point in the strategy), that’s a taxable event. So Uncle Sam gets to tax all at once not only the accumulated borrowed money but also the compounded interest charged for the borrowing of that money.

Close. I don't think the whole "rooting out government waste and inefficiency" angle has come up yet. Which, speaking of, virtually all of those recommended cuts/savings were challenged in court by dems, because of course they were

I do not agree that no one will ever try to accumulate wealth in the future if elons fortune is split up after his death.

I also doubt elons primary motivation is preserving his wealth intact after he’s dead.

If Elons fortune is distributed amongst his children, that is like a hundred chances right there to produce another Elon.

Let Elon be Elon, let’s set up the system to make as many Elons as possible. Let’s set up the system to disperse concentrated wealth over time.

Those pictures remind me of Brewster's Millions.

Just think if you had a 300 million dollar inheritance, and you had to spend 30 million and be flat broke after 30 days especially in 1985.

Still would be hard to do today, but Hollywood should remake Brewster's Millions, and the character has to spend 300 million in 30 days to inherit a 3 billion dollar inheritance.

Joke's on him.

Making money like that, he'll never see a dime of his SS.

How do you not understand that this is kryptonite to “creating more Elons”? They’re mutually exclusive. You cannot expect people to risk it all and create things that advance our society if they know you’re then going to take all the fruits of that labor to give to people who can’t, don’t, or won’t.

I honestly am dumbfounded at the lack of understanding around human nature, motivation, risk/reward, and wealth by so many above the fray moderates on this board.

I don't think Elon's drive is about how much money he can stack or what happens to that money after he is gone.

Elon knows money and time are terrestrial constructs that are both maleable and of only momentary importance. His eyes are way downfield.

Do both of you believe that the Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, et al are engines of entrepreneurial innovation?

Elon should be able to give his money to whoever he wants. But I think it should be dispersed over time. Generations.

A trillion dollar + entity that buys and sells influence forever is not a good thing.

So many misconceptions in this whole story, I can’t believe that someone would even write a story like that.

Good for Elon. He’s nearly the only business leader in America taking long term risks. He is also cautionary tale showing that in order to take long term risks and be successful here you basically need unlimited funding.
