I use clippers with a 1/4" guard to keep my beard close but use shaving cream and a razor to clean the rest

I shaved for probably my first 20 years with an electric razor. I have a very full, coarse beard, so I had to go over a given area a few Tomis to shave close enough to satisfy me. This always led to some major razor burn.

I now keep a high quality disposable razor in the shower and use it the shower after my beard softens. I like a high quality disposable razor much better than electric.

I stopped using a blade and got a Braun. It died after a few years, and I changed to a norelco arcitec, and have used it for 20 yrs. I get a great shave and I have great skin still. My uncle was a pathologist and told me about shaving off skin layers, and how cellular replacement as we age slows.

If you have thick growth they are worthless. Have a 5:00 shadow as soon as you put it down.

I don’t use a safety razor either. Tom’s shave cream and whatever the new Gillette is.

Only use and electric shaver for my junk.

I basically keep that area in like a no guard buzz cut

I don't shave my face, but I use an electric on my head. It isn't as close as a blade but is close enough. It's not like there is any hair on the top of my head anyway...

Used a Norelco and probably 3 Brauns for 25 years or so. Same as other have said. Blade f*cked my soft arse skin up esp. around my neck.

I just got a Braun 8 for Xmas. It is awesome. VERY close shave. I shave every 3 days or so. Never have used them every day. When you wait a few days...it is damned close. Closer than a blade IMO. The Braun 9 looks legit. I wouldn't hesitate to switch to electric.

Electric during the week and classic double edge on weekend.
Barber had a Wahl Finale so I went to sally and got one. Both took some getting used to. the key is to listen to sound which tells when you hitting the right angle with the double edge and when the finale is no longer cutting much with each pass. The electric does a good job especially given time and additional passes.

Switched to a safety razor and haven’t looked back.

The only option IMO. Unless you’re looking for just a weekend cleanup, then I use trimmers.

Braun series 9. Great shave. Love it. Coming from a 1950's Gillette safety razor which I loved. Series 9 is just way less work.

So I have a beard and haven’t been clean shaven in probably 8 years. I do use a Norelco 1 blade on my neck and cheeks. It’s pretty clean for an electric, and I can trim up / line up easily.

how close does it "REALLY" shave
I have a beard trimmer, not a shaver. It doesn't get super close, which I like. I only use the lowest setting on my neck or when I switch from a beard to a stache with stubble (what I have currently).

I haven't been able to bring myself to terms with trying the mustache and clean shaven look.

Electric shavers never do the job a blade can. Before I had a beard I tried one and all it did was cause irritation and it took longer.

I've used a Norelco for 30+ years. I have a course, dark beard (well, I did until it went mostly white), and the Norelco works fine. To get close enough with a regular razor always ends up making my face bleed.

A couple of points on electric shaving:

I use Mennen pre-electric lotion to set up my beard. I don't recommend dry-shaving with electric.

It ALWAYS takes a few shaves after using a blade to set my beard back up for electric. People who use one one time and decide it tears them up too much might want to stick with it for a week or so to see if it works better after a few shaves.

It is kind of like a grinder. I grind and then feel with my other hand to see if it's smooth. And as someone else mentioned, you can hear when you're hitting the grain right and taking it down to the skin.

It takes a little while longer with electric, but I never have cuts and rarely ingrown whiskers.
