Was just talking about this to my wife this past week. Kids that drive these go super fast and wear basically dirt bike / motorcycle helmets that cover their face. They also ride them on the sidewalks. Im talking grade school to middle school.
If you have to wear that type of equipment, and go that fast, you shouldn't be on the sidewalks were little kids and elderly roam.
I'm surprised HOA's haven't started cracking down on these bikes and wear they can and can't be ridin

Some kid is going to get killed in my neighborhood. I pray I'm wrong.

Well bring it on. These young men golf carts and scooters are out of control. Since there is no protection for the drivers, rates should be triple autos.

Get him a regular bike. Kids need exercise.

I live in Lafayette and they're a nuisance. I don't know how these elderly drugged up medicaid zombies don't plow one every day.
I don't care about kids riding around in neighborhoods. It's the dufus doing 30 on congress backing up an entire lane. Or the moron going down a 55mph country road to get to the dollar general at night.
They need to be banned on all public roads who's speed limit is above 35mph. And banned from multilane highways.
Let em ride on the sidewalk, but make them stop at every cross street.

I've got to register my kayak if I put a rolling motor on it.

When it comes to electric bicycles it’s the Wild West

Yes. Anything non human powered on the water requires registration.
Pedal kayaks are fine, electric motor = register.

My favorite ones are the ones that are paint solid black with no lights/reflectors and the rider dressed all in black.
And they are going down Sharp Rd. ( in BR) , that has no shoulders or sidewalks with open ditches at 5:00 AM .

These types of bikes have tricked me numerous times. I’ll see someone pedaling but going way faster than the speed at which they pedal and I’m thinking WTF is going on? How are they going that fast and not pedaling real hard? Then I realized the pedaling helps recharge the battery but most of the time they don’t even need the pedal much to go insanely fast.

They are lawsuits waiting to happen is what they are.

I’m not against them, but these things are gonna be a problem and it’s not even there yet. The reason is because these young kids driving them on the streets and through neighborhoods and not knowing the rules of the road are going to cause accidents. I had three kids the other day I was at a stop sign, getting ready to takeoff and they were doing wheelies through the stop sign perpendicular to me and I had to slam my brakes. I never even saw them. I’m not the old man screaming from his porch about this. I’m just truly concerned for the safety of these kids and they don’t know the rules of the road.

I live in NYC and ride a bike (not an ebike); it's illegal to ride on sidewalks here-- period. I think many cities and towns bar this in downtown / business center areas to protect pedestrians
Are you saying the solution is to put them on the streets? Because that sounds like what nightmares are made of.

just take a look at ER visits right now and how many incidents involve e-bikes and scooters. If an ER physician won't allow their kid to have one, people should take notice. But then again, ER physicians don't like trampoline parks either because of the injuries they see. I agree with others that insurance coverage will eventually influence the laws on use of motorized bikes/scooters.

Good question. I see them with younger kids and adults whiz through stop signs. Same with electric scooters.

I got one around Easter and the guy told me it’s classified as a bicycle and can legally go anywhere those are allowed.
They’re pretty fun/awesome. And can be ridden as regular bikes or you can power it on and use the pedal-assist function (which is awesome) or give it juice and ride it like a scooter without pedaling at all. Mine has actually made me ride bikes on the reg with my son, and we have a blast.
Just got a 750 watt one and took it for a ride this weekend. It was fun. Will enjoy it this summer.
