Electric bikes - what are the laws?

Curious what the law classifies all these electric bikes as that are constantly being ridden on the streets around town these days. I know a bicycle has the right to use the road....but are these considered more of a motorcycle and should be street legal with lights and registration or are they simply looked at as the same as a bicycle?
Reason for asking is my son wants one to ride around the neighborhood.

They’re in a class by themselves with no true laws…it’s a free-for-all

Things go flying down capital heights in wrong direction. They rent them and don’t wear helmets.

They’re becoming a bigger problem here. Even on the hike and bike trails theirs kids doing 35mph running people off the road and one got killed the other day.

I have recently been seeing them on sidewalks hauling arse. Kind of dangerous when they pass from the rear at 25 MPH on a sidewalk with no warning.

Get him the safety kit regardless of the laws surrounding e bikes. They accelerate crazy fast and do street speed limits.

Not 100% sure, but think most states draw the line at 750 watt motors & 30 mph top speed.
If under that cap, it's considered a bicycle and a license isn't necessary.
If above that, then motorcycle laws & license requirements apply.

Some state representative from Bunkie will propose a law to tax them put violaters in jail for 2 years because of the plague they are becoming on the transportation system.

They're allowed on the interstates. As long as you drive in the left hand lane. The left hand lane has been designated as the electric bicycle lane.

We don’t enforce laws any more. If we do it eventually leads to a civil rights march.

Should be treated like a motorcycle if it is powered.

Kids flying through our neighborhood on scooters doing 25 mph with no helmets. Insane parent's allow this.

I got one around Easter and the guy told me it’s classified as a bicycle and can legally go anywhere those are allowed.
They’re pretty fun/awesome. And can be ridden as regular bikes or you can power it on and use the pedal-assist function (which is awesome) or give it juice and ride it like a scooter without pedaling at all. Mine has actually made me ride bikes on the reg with my son, and we have a blast.

I think if you pedal them it's considered a bicycle.

One of my biggest fears while turning onto a side street is accidentally hitting one of these kids.

A state park near me says no kids on ebikes in the campground area.
That's the only law or rule I've seen

Biggest market for e bikes is the Senior age bracket. Or that's what I was told.

I've got to register my kayak if I put a rolling motor on it. Same shite should apply here. If it has a motor it needs to be street legal, licensed driver, or off the street.
