Reason for asking is my son wants one to ride around the neighborhood.
I'm all about letting kids be kids and enjoying life, but would not advise in my professional opinion....

Sounds like these things have invaded just about everywhere. We got kids all over our Houston suburb riding them. I hate to call them a nuisance because I grew up riding dirt bikes and then 3 wheelers, but those are different (somewhat). I say somewhat because these e-bikes haul arse but then not near as fast as a 2 stroke 125. At least most of them wear helmets. We didn’t. We also took our bikes back in the woods to ride. Granted we did travel some on the roads some but it was brief.
One kid hit an older man on a sidewalk here last week and killed him. That’s what has everybody in our little burb torqued up right now but it is inevitable that someone is gonna hit one of these kids at a crosswalk and it is not gonna be pretty and it’s gonna make this situation riding these things come to a head.

In Louisiana, e-bikes are classified into three categories: Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes can assist up to 20 mph, while Class 3 e-bikes can assist up to 28 mph. Riders do not need a driver's license or registration for these e-bikes, but Class 3 riders must wear helmets and are restricted from certain paths

I got one around Easter and the guy told me it’s classified as a bicycle and can legally go anywhere those are allowed.
They’re pretty fun/awesome. And can be ridden as regular bikes or you can power it on and use the pedal-assist function (which is awesome) or give it juice and ride it like a scooter without pedaling at all. Mine has actually made me ride bikes on the reg with my son, and we have a blast.
Yeah I got one for hunting last year and I love it. I ride from my house to the WMA (after daylight) to squirrel hunt sometimes, it's about 8 miles one way. It has made me realize that if I got an actual motorcycle I would kill myself pretty quickly on it.

I live in the town where the kid on the Surron did a wheelie into the 81 year-old substitute teacher and Marine vet and killed him last month.
Mom is in jail awaiting trial because the cops were at her house last year responding to a complaint and she lied to them during their investigation.
See Mejer Jordan on FB if you want to check out video of the little angel doing his nonsense.
A 17 year-old kid lost his life in a solo accident a week or so ago a couple of towns away.
Boy Toy Bonta, Kommiefornia AG, last week banned some Ebike and Emotorcycle sales from Amazon.
I believe our laws are similar to Texas that was posted earlier in this thread.
