My question is why haven’t these mass shootings always happened then? The mentally ill and guns have been around in this country for a very long time.

Social media and the rest of the internet certainly is doing no favors
You have to be mentally fricked in the head to go and start killing a bunch of innocent people in the first place but what gets them there is the interesting part. That is probably one of the biggest differences today compared to back then is the influences of social media/ resources online has on people.

I work in the field. I'll be more specific.
Anti-social personality disorder is a characterlogical/personality disorder, that although falls under the very large umbrella of "mental disorders" it is more accurately described as a disorder of who you fundamentally are as person. Hence your character or personality.
In other words. This is not a neuro-psychiatric disorder. This is not mental illness in the classic sense. Our prisons are absolutely filled by people with anti-social traits or anti-social disorder itself.
That's why this guy did what he did. He has a dysfunction of personality.
