Not entitled, but employers will not get or retain the best if they don't provide vacation
This thread makes me appreciate all of the jobs I've had. I wouldn't take a job if I didn't have vacation year 1.

No way I would hire an entry level position and let them take off on a week long vacation within six months of starting.
Don't be jealous.

Well, I've interviewed for 40 plus jobs since graduating college, and I have yet to interview with a company that didn't allow me to have vacation my first year. I think I've just been lucky enough to interview with managers who don't treat their employees like shite and try to hardball them. They also understand that happy employees are productive employees, and not allowing them to take off for a year is going to piss them off greatly. These said employees will get the hell out of there when the first comparable offer comes their way that has time off as an option.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Its not a great indication of job security when you can leave and nobody misses a beat.

Then our careers are quite different. There's no way I'd do what I do and have no vacation. Even out of college I was offered minimum 2 weeks, and many times 3 weeks to start.

I asked my boss of one of my first jobs about unpaid leave. He said that if there was ever a day where they managed without me to not even bother coming back.
I've never asked about or taken unpaid leave since.
Your boss was trying to sound like a hardass, but in reality he's a complete dumbass.
So what happens if someone is sick or in the hospital for a few days? The business crumbles? Sounds like he's done a bang-up job managing it...

I can go on vacation with my cell and computer and still keep up with my job. Most people with "unlimited" vacation are expected to do that.
It's been a long time since i've been totally disconnected from work for more than a day or so

When I started with my company, I had 40 hours of PTO starting day one, then the next year I had 80 Hours. Year three I got 120 hours and this year I have 160 hours. PTO banks suck because it is your vacation and sick time all rolled into one, but I typically never call out so it does not really effect me. If I need a day off here and there my boss tells me to work from home and not to use my PTO and by work from home, I basically just answer the phone if it rings. We put in a lot of overtime away from home so he looks out for me. I remember my first year, I did not take any of my PTO, and right before Christmas he walked in and just told me take the week off and not to come back until after the new year and not to worry about using PTO and I would be paid as if I was in the office.

That's so stupid. If a company is one person away from falling apart at any monument they aren't in a good position.

And if you can bolt out without anybody having to scramble and pick up the slack you aren't really in a good position.

This post further points in the direction that you are stupid and are in a very menial job. Any job that requires skill will have some sort of stress attached to it and really require you take some time off in order to collect your thoughts and order your priorities.
And the fact that you say "limited" as part of your job description is a pretty terrible thing to say. Why don't you have a word with your manager to make your job less limited and provide more freedom to do the job as you see fit?

There is nothing quite like sitting at the beach condo, working on the laptop with a beer in hand.
I never mind working for a few hours/day while on vacation.
When you're that important, you can't 100% disconnect

quote:That isn't close to an appropriate comparison. Not earning vacation until after year one is more akin to not getting paid anything until after you've worked there a year.
Why doesn't the employer just pay you a years salary in your first day also?
Vacation time is earned, just like salary, bonuses, commission, etc.

You sound like a good employee that he respects and appreciates, and not some whiny kid that is always asking for more.
