re: EDIT: Should employees be allowed unpaid leave if their work is covered?

Yep. I wake up early every day regardless of situation, so on vacation, I catch up on work while Mrs. Crickets sleeps. Do the same in the evening for half an hour or so while she gets ready for dinner or whatever.
There are times with no connectivity, which is always nice. But, when I'm connected, I can greatly affect my bottom line and you can bet your arse I do so.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Its not a great indication of job security when you can leave and nobody misses a beat.
I'd say that's more of a sign of shitty management if you can't go two days without an employee and everything goes immediately to hell.

Let's say you are hiring for a position. You have two equally qualified applicants. One states during the interview, that they have a vacation planned within the next few months. Who do you think is going to get the job?
Same scenario, but one is an obviously, 6 months pregnant woman.......
My point is, maybe you shouldn't be looking to change jobs, if you've got immediate plans.
Wat?
I always inform my future employers of anytime I expect to be out at hire. It's never been paid obviously, or a problem.
Maybe it's because I work in a cushy consulting engineering industry, but this is not industry norm where I work.

There is a difference in the business going to hell, and not being missed while you are gone.

I usually wake up really early so I can catch up while everyone is still in bed. They don't like me answering email when I'm sauced though

Yeah as someone who works in the Energy sector, some of the attitudes on display here shock me.

Then our careers are quite different. There's no way I'd do what I do and have no vacation. Even out of college I was offered minimum 2 weeks, and many times 3 weeks to start.
Probably very different. I don't get judged on my demeanor when things are going correctly, I get judged when things are upside down and how well we come out of them. My attitude doesn't get affected at work, it's just work. I'll do my best.

The MSU guy and F500 companies aren't recruiting from the same pool. He's able to bully people into no vacation since he's not hiring top level people.

Starting April 1, my company will offer unlimited vacation :)
This is the way it should be. I know a lot of old farts will freak out at this, but I'm willing to bet that giving the employee a bit more freedom in taking time off makes for a happier and more productive company.

Yeah this thread is full of justifications of bad practice and ever more creative justification. I personally lol'd at the guy who said to not return to work if he goes on vacation, or that some employees need to prove themselves before they get benefits/vacay.
Solid bottom tier lowlife managers there.

They were huge on employees using all their vacation. And I will say on the time I worked there nobody left except people like me who had to move. And most of the workforce is younger which normally job hop.
I worked for Viacom/MTV for a while and their benefits were unreal. 8 weeks 100% paid Paternity leave, and 13 weeks 100% paid Maternity, with the second 13 weeks being 90% paid.

way I would hire an entry level position and let them take off on a week long vacation within six months of starting.
Then you likely aren't in a position to hire people, or you're a manager of a Mc Donald's.

This post further points in the direction that you are stupid and are in a very menial job. Any job that requires skill will have some sort of stress attached to it and really require you take some time off in order to collect your thoughts and order your priorities.
And the fact that you say "limited" as part of your job description is a pretty terrible thing to say. Why don't you have a word with your manager to make your job less limited and provide more freedom to do the job as you see fit?
Continue on fighting the good fight and interviewing at 40+ different positions, companies love employees that use them as leverage for a better offer or ones that jump ship after a year of work because the grass is greener. You're a super naive person if you believe these people you interviewed with don't speak about potential hires among themselves. They all know each other, went to school together, worked together, etc. etc.
Ya big dumb dumb stupid head.

Yeah, hiring lowlifes and people who have nowhere else to turn as a service to the employees has proven time and time again to be a reliable and solid business practice. They may as well install a rotating door at the entrance.

So whats the deal? why haven't you taken one or why do you keep interviewing?
Well, I've got a discernible set of skills, like speaking foreign languages, international marketing, consistently breaking my quota, and having my sales territories in the Top 10% of the company.
With that resume, I consistently get emails and calls from companies who want to interview me to come work for them. I've gotten 3 emails so far this week asking if I had time to interview. When someone comes to me with some nice benefits and salary, I will listen to what they have to say.
This is something you don't have to worry about, since you clearly have no skills that the competition is wanting to hire.

I come everyday to do my job and get things accomplished. I typically come in early most days and get everything I can taken care of. I have taken on extra responsibilities and get those done regardless on whether they are typically part of my job. I now handle all of the DOT and Out of state contractors licenses. It does not take me a lot of time, but no one else around to office knows how to do it so I consider that job security. If I need a day off I am able to take it because I don't ask for it very often and my work is up to date.

Exactly why I lol'd at whoever said that if you're gone and no one notices you're a shitty employee. It's way more a sign of a shitty company than the employee.
