If EBT could only be used to buy rice, beans, discount meat, fruit, vegetables, and a handful of other healthy food you need to survive on no one would have an issue with it.

If that were the case, very few would have it.

I've always advocated that EBT should only be used at designated food depots that solely stock healthy staple foods.

Don't like what's in stock, get a fricking job and buy all the Hot Fries and 2 liter Orange drinks you want. We always hear politicians "lament" there are "no healthy food options" in poor neighborhoods. Well, that would solve this problem

EBT is as much of a subsidy to the grocers that accept it as it is to the recepients that use it

A combination of both.

Having positive role models as a kid shows you that working hard can take you where you want to be in life.

Plus, the sense of pride knowing that you did it yourself. That whole self respect thing can go a long way.

Hell, I don't want to have to have a job, but I also enjoy having things, going places and (most importantly) having money to do what I want.

Yep. Which is why there will never be any real food stamp reform or significant limitations placed on what may be purchased with food stamps. The grocery store lobby goes nuts when restrictions are brought up.

A fifth of the country is on food stamps and last year these individuals used over $70B in grocery stores. The number one item purchased with food stamps is soda, which has a high profit margin. Grocers will fight tooth and nail to keep the gravy train rolling.

If you go to a store and they just ring up alcohol as beverage or specialty items as deli, it is because they look the other way when EBT users purchase these on their card.

They wouldn't actually be paying the tax, they would just be shuffling tax dollars to pay sales tax.

Yep. So it kind of makes sense.

A great reason to support Calandro's.

I'm sure some do, but their computers are supposed to prevent that.

Absolutely. They also blame their circumstances and everyone but themselves. I'm not saying all poor people, though. A lot of them in rural areas don't have a lot of options for employment and just settle for what's in front of them, and they don't think there's a way out of it.

2.5 years ago, my wife and I got tired of the proverbial ceiling we had in Alabama. Finally, had enough of having nothing to do and not so great jobs. So, I started doing cost of living analysis, reading about the economical climate and overall quality of life of different cities. We settled on Fort Worth because it checked the box in every category. 3 weeks later, we took what we had in savings and moved out here sight unseen. It's the best thing we've ever did. We have great jobs, nice apartment, and have plenty of time and money to enjoy the things around us. Sometimes, people just need to leave where they feel comfortable but stagnant.

I agree the American dream can be reached now more than ever before but unfortunately the poor would rather make excuses on their misfortune and lay blame on how certain people hold them back. This is not a color thing either my gf has an uncle that is a mooch and has raised his kids the same. All collecting government assistance. Lazy POS

I actually feel sorry for the rural poor, they're a busted fan belt or water pump on a shitty car away from starving to death

But that's their own fault for not moving for better opportunities

That's why it is just scanned as beverage or deli instead of liquor/cake/etc. It gets past the computer.

Michelle Obama mandated the most ridiculous changes to American school lunches anyone has ever seen in the name of healthy eating.

LINK

The worst part was that Harvard studies showed kids didn't necessarily start eating healthier...they just stopped eating at school. Amazing how that works when you shovel shite at people like that. Thankfully these mandated were rolled back.

Look at how liberals and corporate interests in the grocery business are responding to long existing and more recently mandated rules preventing bullshite purchases from EBT users.

LINK

So when we shovel shite at school kids, it's in their best interests and the First Lady trashes those opposed to it. When we try to shovel the same shite to people abusing SNAP and EBT purchases, we are "stigmatizing," poor people with a lack of, "food choice."

Funny how that works...
