July 28: First day of school for EBRPSS students

I can remember starting school the day after Labor Day. Soon, it will be July.

Vacation plans and summer camps be damned.

What’s to melt over? It’s 8 days extra pay at least if not more.

Most of the public school parents will be happy about this. 8 more days of free babysitting.

Are teachers paid by number of days “taught” or “worked?”

Or do they receive a set salary annually?

Yup...8 days ought to cover it.

I got this from my son's school district the other day...

Good Afternoon Elementary and Middle School Families, this is an announcement from the district: Beginning on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, the Lafayette Parish School System will extend the school day by five minutes for all elementary and middle schools. This is due to weather-related school closures during the year. LPSS wants to ensure that students receive the appropriate amount of instruction necessary to have a successful school year and meet state guidelines requiring 63,720 instructional minutes per academic year. The additional five minutes will be added to the end of the school day. As a result, dismissal and afternoon bus routes will be pushed back five minutes.

5 minutes a day. FIVE.

Did public schools have air conditioning in those days?

Most teachers are paid by the number of days. A normal year in my parish is 182 days. There are a couple of “storm” days built in though. If required to work more days they should also receive more compensation based on their daily rate.

Yes for a school year. You have the option to get bigger checks during the school year only or smaller ones spread out over the entire year.

Just pull up each parish and it tells you the pay.

They should just switch to year round school with 2 weeks off in between quarters.

EBRPSS could add several years to the calendar and not be addressing the shortcomings of their district.

That’s cool. Those handful of FB friends seems like a small sample size when talking about an entire school district though.
