re: EBR School Superintendent doesn’t think 15 unexcused absences for a student is a problem

I think there should be unlimited absences.
If they want to flunked out and their parents dont care I dont.
There should be personal responsibility.
The kids that want to be there will get a better education for it.
Same token if my kid does great and I'm off every other Friday they should get to stay home and we go do something.

EBR is lost and will never recover. If St George can get its ISD up and going, EBR is toast.

Look at it like employment. working days a year is between 260-262 day. Most school years are 180 days
Not many employees get 20 PTO days and the equivalent PTO for 180 school days is 13.8 days.

This guy is in charge of some of the worst schools in the state and he wants to further lower the standards. That community is a lost cause.

Just continue to lower standards.
How did that uniform policy work for discipline and truancy?

quote:you still have 180 instructional days. I don’t understand your point. But 15 is too many of 180. That would translate to a missed work days of 20+ in real life. Can you imagine an employee that no shows almost 10% of the time and that’s fine?
look at the school calendar and note how many days off they have during the school year. Not just the holidays, but the "in service" days too. These frickers don't go to school for a full month at any point. But the Super says 15 days missed isn't that BOaD? Fire him today.

I went to private school. My senior year I think I was there maybe 110 days. I was already accepted at LSU. I had a scholarship; I was ready to be done.
Hard arse old calc teacher tried to fail me for just absences. I still hate that woman.
I expect 0% of the students in question are planning to do anything except leach.
25 this year. Next year makes 30. In the words of Borat: VERY EXCITE!

I agree with you, but it’s unlikely you’ll find many people advocating for personal accountability these days. Not here, not anywhere nowadays.
That notion has been tossed in the same dumpster as common sense. You’re more likely to be met with excuses and justifications for this type of lazy and entitled behavior.

15 is a bunch. If they are teaching at all it would be hard to stay up
Students can have more absences than that as long as the absence is excused.

This is the thing now. Lower the bar. They are changing the grading scale so everyone passes too, even if they don't turn anything in.

Mr.Cole wants to redefine reality instead of telling the black community to get their fricking kids to school.
The definition of part of the problem.

But the females have time to braid their hair and learn how to twerk.
The males grow their hair and its biota, learn how to hold handguns, and when to use screwdrivers and when to use prybars.

Maybe I’m crazy, but I’m not sure we should be using truancy rate as a metric for school performance in the first place.
To me it seems like a high truancy rate reflects more poorly on the school’s population than the school itself. Like.. how much can the school really do to get those kids to show up? That’s the parents’ job. If the kids aren’t showing up, fail them. If they keep failing, send them to the fry cook academy or something instead.
I’m not saying EBRPSS is doing a stellar job or anything, but it seems like our entire incentive structure for public schools is just.. dumb.
