EBR Parish School System taps into reserves to balance budget.

The parish school system elects to use 19 million dollars in reserves rather than lay off employees even though enrollment has fallen by 1,100 students.
May 27
And now the school supt. wants to take a high bid from the current maintenance provider to maintain the schools rather than take a big savings from the low bidder.
What's even worse is Aramark cut their bid and is much lower than what they are charging now. It makes you wonder what's going on.
June 4th.
What's odd is Drake has been critical of the current maintenance provider, Aramark, and he's the one who pushed to take bids once their current contract expired. But now he want to give them a five year contract for more even though he was dissatisfied with their work.
Now board members are asking questions as to why the bids were kept from them, why others who scored higher than Ararmark weren't given the work, and why a system tight for money isn't looking for cheaper options.
Apparently Aramark has friends in high places. That's the only good explanation.

Even as neighboring Livingston Parish is planning to cut 40 positions to deal with the loss of students after August's flooding, East Baton Rouge Parish, which lost an even greater percentage of its students, is opting to draw from budget reserves to avoid job cuts.
That will mean once again spending more money than the East Baton Rouge Parish school system is taking in, this time by about $19 million.

Livingston lost about 500 students, a 2.3 percent overall enrollment decline. East Baton Rouge lost about 1,100 students, or a 2.6 percent decline

Cleveland-based GCA Services Group and Houston-based Jacobs Field Services, the two other finalists, offered bids to do the same work Aramark’s been doing for the district since 2004, and to do the work for much less: $5.3 million less in the case of GCA and $923,000 less in the case of Jacobs for the first year of the contract.
quote:
Over the course of five years, Aramark’s services would be even more costly than its competitors: $29.7 million more than what GCA proposed and $9.7 million more than what Jacobs proposed.
What's even worse is Aramark cut their bid and is much lower than what they are charging now. It makes you wonder what's going on.
quote:
It’s an even bigger difference considering that Aramark this past year was charging the school system about $28.2 million, which is $3.3 million more than the $24.9 million it’s proposing to do the same work for next year.

Drake’s decision to renew with Aramark was somewhat surprising. Since taking over as superintendent in June 2015, Drake has often been critical of the company. He immediately found fault with the condition of many school buildings he inherited and demanded more from Aramark.

Actually the EBR School system has been spending more than they have been taking in, and have been drawing down their reserves for several years now.
Looking at how they are handling the drop in enrollment, and this maintenance thing makes you wonder if they care about cutting costs.

Idiot EBR voters just renewed more school taxes.

Not this idiot, I voted no; however, your point is well taken.
It is obvious the people in charge aren't acting in a fiscally responsible manner.

But the schools need more money!
Won't someone think of the children?!

Can't think of anyplace run by Aramark that people have been happy with.
I know they used to run the cafeteria systems at the state buildings but couldn't turn a profit doing so, likely because they wanted high prices for crap.
Also, didn't they just have a disasterous tenure running the concession stands at the Tennessee Titans games? This sticks out because there was word they were going to get a contract to run the LSU concessions this year.

I remember several years back Aramark was going to donate something like a million dollars to the school system to keep the contract.
Think about that for a second. Why not lower the contract instead?
It seems they have bee overcharging for years, and the bids prove it.

When is St. George kicking up again?

I have noticed a disturbing trend in EBR of just about every tax increase request getting approved. Which isn't surprising when much of the voting base pays little or no taxes. Then the elected officials spend lavishly supporting the wants of the non-taxpayers who voted for the taxes.
The Founding Fathers argued heavily that property ownership should be a requirement for voting rights and I agree. If you aren't contributing then you shouldn't be deciding where my money is being spent.

Was also in charge of maintaining the athletic fields at EBR schools during this time and those fields were pure garbage

What is the actual hard startup date for the petitions to begin? I think it's sometime this month. Maybe next month?

No word yet. I kind of hope they wait a little longer. Broome hasn't finished adding straw to the camel's back yet.

Supt. Drake isn't helping the cause. Many said we needed to give him a chance, but he's proving that he can't control costs and system test scores are dropping.

One of the biggest lies politians run on. Pumping money into schools doesn't make kids smarter or schools more effective.
It's the same shite as people passing rediculous legislation all in the name of safety.

Follow the money. I think it's pretty obvious.

Yes it is. I'm glad Drake is getting some heat, but watch it will all blow over.
Fewer students, no cuts, cheaper bids and we go with a high bidder who has been screwing us.
It's all out in the open.

I can't understand it. We passed a bunch of stupid taxes recently, but the one tax we didnt' pass, was one that none of us would have to pay, the increased hotel tax.

Aramark, I would love to know what kind of "maintenance" they provide. I have spent a little time at Tara High School the last year or so and I am amazed that place is not condemned. Nothing appears to have been maintianed from the track, fields, bathrooms etc.. Hopefully the clasrooms look much nicer than what I have seen, but I doubt it.. Nakamoto, should really look in to exposing the shape some of these high schools are in, it is as if there is not maintnance at all.
