Sad. This state sucks for cycling. New Orleans is trying at least and even kenner just announced a bike lane.

I would be shocked if the driver was looking at a phone. Shocked!

The cops will pull the computer from the vehicle and see if an attempt was even made to brake.

Can anyone speak to the number of drivers on a road leading to a large prison? Is it often full of stressed visitors and guards?

We drive that road all the time going to/from our camp. There never seems to be a huge amount of traffic, mostly it seems like local people like any other back road.

Although Hwy 66 is hilly with curves, there are some passing areas. From the pics, my husband says it looks like the bikes were hit close to CR-265 Google maps street view. It appears they were headed towards US 61, and were going up a slight slope so the bikes should have been visible from behind. There is a curve in the road shortly before that, but I think it's far enough back (way before the guard rail that you can't even see in the pics) that the bikes still should've been visible.

TROOP A NEWS RELEASE
June 30, 2018

Driver Arrested after Fatal Crash involving Bicyclists in West Feliciana Parish

St. Francisville – At approximately 11:30 am on June 30, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a fatal crash involving two bicyclist on LA 66 west of US 61 in West Feliciana Parish. The crash took the life of 61-year-old Anthony “Buddy” Amoroso of Baton Rouge. The crash also resulted in the arrest of 21-year-old Nicholas Alexander of Lafayette.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Amoroso and 71-year-old Thomas Clement of St. Gabriel were riding their bicycles eastbound on LA 66. Amoroso and Clement were traveling single file in the eastbound lane of LA 66 when Alexander failed to reduce his speed and move over. Amoroso and Clement were both struck from behind by Alexander’s 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe.

Amoroso sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the West Feliciana Parish Coroner’s Office. Clement sustained serious injuries and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. Amoroso and Clement were both wearing helmets and proper biking attire.

Alexander was not injured and placed under arrest by Troopers. He was booked into the West Feliciana Parish Jail for Negligent Homicide, Negligent Injuring, and Limitations on Passing Bicycles.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that they should remain alert at all times and remember the three foot rule when passing bicycles. Louisiana law does permit a motorist to pass a bicycle in a no passing zone only when it is safe to do so. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.

Bicyclists should never assume that a motorist can see them. Simple precautions such as wearing an approved bicycle helmet, reflective materials, and avoiding distractions are key to preventing crashes. Louisiana law requires bicyclists to remain as close to the right of side of the roadway as possible and obey all traffic laws.

If the cyclist was on the far right of the road and heading the right way then the driver is responsible.

Guarantee you he was texting.

And this phenomenon will never ever stop. I see them all day, every day.

Makes me hate people.

Rest in peace, Buddy.

You think “rednecks” didn’t have access to this newfangled bicycle technology growing up?

It says the driver didn't reduce speed or attempt to move over.. So I think it's safe to say he is responsible.

Well, judging by the wreck alone we know the cyclist was on the right side.
How? Front right of truck damaged, rear of bike damaged.

So you can't say the cyclist was against traffic.

Next was the cyclist in the middle or the right of the road?

Even then, the suv could have passed on left.

. So.. I'll be shocked if the driver wasn't at fault.
