Pay but also they want assurance that their jobs are protected from going automated.

I am not knowledgeable enough about that industry to know whether these people are underpaid or not.
But I do find it interesting that generally speaking, in the workforce, increasing pay is what is driving the increase in automation. So kind of makes their demands ironic.

Top pay is 39 dollars an hour straight time. So a longshoreman would have to work over 6,000 straight time hours to achieve that. Also, in 2016, top pay was like 34. So add another thousand hours.

I dont know where you get your numbers but when I talk to the guys out there, in person, firsthand knowledge, that's not what they get paid.

Shoe Bang, what makes you an expert on this topic?

i’ve been in Int’l Maritime Logistics for 3 generations. grew up going on ships
with my dad when i was 6-7 y.o.

Used to be a Shipping Agent and liaison for the owners & charterers. Then opened a logistics company.

you don’t know what you speak of, if this strike happens, it can collapse inventory & bare shelves for many products & disrupt global shipping lanes.

this could be a piece of the “October surprise” that can lead to chaos if it goes on for several days even, this is NOT
GOOD AT ALL!

It’s the entire country’s major ports, that could be affected. you kkkw how many ships will be idle with cargo onboard or empty awaiting to load???

the financial losses will be tremendous as well.Trucking companies won’t have nothing to transport (that are tied to the ports).

We export liquid and solid raw materials to go overseas and the. import the finished goods.

we export food all around the world, grain, chicken etc…

this will effect the entire world. you may want to educate yourself before spouting out silly crap.

Westbak111, someone above mentioned the west coast ports won’t accept diverted shipments. Is that true as that’s the first time I’ve heard that.

Other options include non ILA ports (albeit small in number and capacity), Canada (Halifax) and possibly Mexico then truck or rail? Regardless, it will create a huge cluster.

Problem with this, is the smaller ports aren't set up to handle the volume that would result. Don't have the labor. Don't have the acreage. Don't have the cranes.

West coast union got 5 dollars an hour raise a year for their new contract.

quote:

Union workers at ports in the East Coast and Gulf Coast earn a base wage of $39 an hour after six years on the job. That is significantly less than their unionized West Coast peers, who make $54.85 an hour — a rate that will increase to $60.85 in 2027, excluding overtime and benefits.

Assuming a 40-hour workweek, West Coast port workers are making more than $116,000 a year, versus $81,000 for their counterparts in the East.

As another Poster above mentioned the unions are American workers, but the ships are all foreign owned. To support the foreign owned ships at this stage in the election process would be mighty risky.

I support free trade and see it in economic terms that the risk is when goods can’t cross country borders, armies do.

It’s a potentially bad situation where everyone looses.

pretty sure that in our area (miss. river) the only thing that will be affected are the breakbulk and container docks. I don't think any of the other major facilities, grain elevators, chemical docks etc are union.

I had a friend who is in the union and does this work for the port in Nola
I brought him to work one day and got to learn about the process. These are very much in demand well paid jobs considering almost none of these folks have much of an education.

You have to put in your time and move up the chain to get chosen for the good jobs.
They meet up at 6:00 AM and the Forman call out who they are taking for each area based on seniority. Some mornings, especially if there are no cruise ships in port, some people won’t get to work that day and will just go back home.
