Dwi are all about revenue. Wanna stop dwi’s? Put breath recognition into every car but the police would be against that because it stops their gravy train.

Won’t work. People would easily find a way to turn it off.

If a sober spouse or friend is in the vehicle the officer might let them take the vehicle home. That shouldn't be an option or courtesy.
The taking of the vehicle is not a penalty, but rather a means of securing the vehicle and keeping it from being a roadside hazard.
In our system, consequences are given by courts after a trial rather than police at roadside.

The county receives a % of every tow

I miss the 80’s where DUI wasn’t even a thing. You would go out, get hammered, drive home. It was great! Even if you got pulled over, the cops would just confiscate your beer and let you go.
Ahh, the good ole days. Until those Karen’s from MADD decided to make a big deal out of it. Those nosy old women really ruined a good thing.

quote:That's exactly what happens. And they lose their license for 6 months, and could face jail time. And pay $10,000 or more in fines and penalties, not to mention the resulting cost of higher auto insurance premiums. It often results in job loss as well, and I wouldn't doubt divorce, or child custody issues too.
Those persons should be arrested and have their vehicles towed
Contrast that with texting and driving. It causes far more accidents and deaths, but no one cares about that. If you are caught actively texting and driving, it's a fine and that's it. No MADD, no soapbox, no villyfying, no emotional outcry, just a PSA or two asking people to put their phone down, which no one pays attention to.

Should cars not have seatbelts because people won't wear them?

I understand. But the real problem is how many times did they put lives in peril and not get caught. A person with like 3 of them probably should have 50 but just got very lucky…
Try hundreds or even thousands for some.

SIAP. Some of you are focusing on the .080 BAC and arguing (probably correctly) that you're not "drunk". Impairment is hard to prove, intoxication isn't. Same as on the jobsite, except they will run you off at .001 BAC.

All too often it’s not before they’ve killed someone.

Everyone who drinks alcohol has driven at least one time loaded . Get over it man. Nobody is perfect

The US Constitution's ban on such practices is still applicable.
Still waiting on a viable answer.

To prove it’s nothing more than a money grab for the county, his probation officer said as soon as pays all his fines, he’ll be done. What a fricking joke.
To further prove it’s a money grab and not focused on public safety: the fact that you can get one sleeping it off in your car.

I can’t wait till all cars are fully self driving and we won’t have to worry about this nonsense.
I don't think law enforcement is giving up on that revenue stream, especially when you can get a DWI sleeping in the back seat of a truck with the AC on.

For sure. But you wouldn’t have to content to show them your phone, right?
There are also Siri features where texts can be dictated.

I read somewhere that 98% of all “drunk” drivers hit multiple mailboxes, trees and kill at least one person on their way home!!!!

handless is the exception here but I’m pretty sure there’s nothing that the cops, or NSA couldn’t dig out of your phone if they wanted it

If I ever get one, one thing is for sure….i don’t want a jury trial. Way too many extreme views. Hell, if it was my first one and I blew a .08, some of you would try and send me away for 2 years. Rediculous

People make stupid decision. Everybody has made them even if it wasn’t driving while driving high or drunk.
I can look past once as a learning experience but multiple times being arrested for DUI is the problem.
Once should be painful penalty of money, time and publicity.
Anytime afterwards should be long prison penalties.
