Now, KPEL is claiming that the crawfish pond didn't belong to Duson Baw.

The plot thickens.....

Technicality.

So he’s sharecropping it.

He had every bit of right to be there and the news crew didn’t.

Watch they will try to put pressure on the property owner to have the trespassing charges dropped and do something to make the crawfish farmer look bad.

No, he stated his reasons pretty clearly in the video. He didn’t want them filming his ponds for a story about corona virus because what happens when someone (buyer, govt agency or whoever) sees the ponds on their broadcast. A buyer he supplies could say we aren’t purchasing from you until you test your ponds. A state agency could come in and tell him he can’t sell his crawfish until his ponds are tested. Just like he said, putting his business and his ponds out there in a story about corona virus means he will lose money because as soon as they do he will have to have his ponds tested. The tv station sure as hell isnt going to pay for it. He had every right to be pissed.

Yeah that’s not how this works

That's how most farmers are down here. Especially ones farming thousands of acres.

Doesn't mean he doesn't have the right to chase them off. He likely has a written agreement to farm it. KLFY likely didn't have permission to be there.

2nd hardly any crawfish workers are illegal

I'm not sure I'd go that far.

Now the owners typically try to go to bat and get them in the system legally but I'm not going to sit here and say there aren't quite a few that are illegal that they owners/farmers don't even know are illegal. Hell the owners/farmers will tell you that themselves.

quote:

3rd and most importantly no crawfish farms had workers test positive
The workers that tested positive were at peeling plants

This all be true.

ETA There are far more working legally on H2A/H2B visas than there are illegals....but to downplay that there is still an issue with illegals working crawfish is disingenuous.

It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t “own the land” he’s paying a rent or a percent of the commodity gathered on that particular piece of land. I can promise you that the land owner would back him 100% because the owner has just as much to lose as the farmer if Ch 10 is out there without permission give a BS report

It may not be how it works but that was his reasoning. Why would he let the local news station jeopardize his business by broadcasting a story about corona virus from his ponds? The simple fact of the matter is he didn’t want to his business placed in anyone’s crosshairs.

they don't have to trespass to do their jobs.

why didn't the news crew just stand on the side of the road in front of any of the hundreds of generic ponds that border a public highway.

Ah. Yes. Walking into a crawfish field in the middle of nowhere (when assuredly they passed other ones immediately adjacent to public roads) that belongs to someone else is “doing their job.”
