Ultimately I think most people want both, and I think both really have gotten more difficult for men and less difficult for women since about 2012.

It really isn't hard to weed these idiots out. They will gladly tell you they are mentally ill with all of their "flair" on their profiles. Either that, or they will flat out say they won't date anyone to the right of Mao.
Like the OT, there are a lot of "independent, middle of the road" women that are really leftists. If you choose carefully, they will let you quietly dominate them a few times. You just have to know when to bail because they are, after all, mentally unstable.

Close knit community from my old school and my childhood church, so it is a thing where you hear about people whether you want to or not.
And in the case of the first one, when I say “national award”, I’m not understating. When you pull up a nomination list for something and see a very distinctive name no one else would ever have, it sticks out.

So guys go to a crappier gym or neglect their bodies entirely to focus on their careers. Then the insta-bitches reject guys for not being in perfect shape.
Then 35 hits them and they start getting desperate and end up with a very average albeit nice guy - and that's if she doesn't already have a trophy or two. A fraction of these super lonely "past her prime" types might compensate for their sadness by focusing on her career/business and trying to be a "cool aunt" - in which case that will likely replace the cats in her life. She won't be a "crazy cat lady", but she will be known as a bitch to her colleagues - especially female colleagues with families.
Advice to younger guys: If you find the right one, get her a ring ASAP and start making babies (if that's what y'all want). Make sure she's physically attractive to you, entertaining, and shares your values on family, religion, building wealth, and careers. Make sure you both make each other a better person and there is enough trust to handle the occasional difficult times.
If you don't find the right one, either change your strategy or strongly consider rejecting marriage entirely and buy whatever impractical car/boat/vacations you want. Know your worth, especially if you are a healthy younger guy with a good career. Don't settle for second rate women who are just trying to settle down after spending the last 15 years making mistakes.

I don't know about 55, but I'm mid-40s and they come on STRONG. I'm a fairly laid back guy, so I'm generally more amused by it than anything - my reaction is more like "WTF is happening?" than "yeah, that's right ladies."
On occasion, I'll find one interesting enough to warrant a date and we'll go out for dinner, drinks, or whatever. I'm pretty blunt/direct, so I usually just ask them to explain their interest in a guy 20 years their senior.
The answer is always the same - some variation of "guys my age are douchebags and we prefer MEN."
The trick is to be "older", but not "old." <---- This is an entirely different conversation and one men/women get wrong at about a 95% clip.
