Driver who killed EBR councilman sentenced, gets handful of days in jail

I mean if the State can’t prove the driver was impaired or distracted and it was purely an accident...I don’t see the reason for locking him up for 20 years.

Was he doing something malicious when the incident occurred?
If he didn't see a biker and hit and killed him, I imagine he feels pretty shitty about that. Has he not expressed remorse?
Just feels like there's a detail missing that needs to be known that would make it make a bit more sense.

Speed was the factor. Toxicology results were not mentioned in the article.

Was speed a factor or just failing to reduce speed? If he didn't see them then of course he wouldn't reduce speed or change lanes. I know this seems light but if the guy wasn't drunk or high and he didn't intentionally run them down then what do you do? I would hate to think I could go to jail for many many years for what is truly an accident. I already don't think bikers should be on the road so I am sure I am biased.

This is part of the problem. Nobody takes driving as serious as it should be because we do it so much, but this guys direct actions caused someone to lose their life and another to be seriously injured all because he had his head up his arse. I’m not saying he should get the chair, but someone’s life is definitely worth more than 90 days and especially 15.

What if he was going the speed limit and failed to see Buddy coming over a hill?
I understand what you’re saying, but not every unnatural death means someone needs to be jailed. There are accidents that happen.

Bicycles should not be allowed on any road with a speed limit above 45. Bicycles were banned from the interstates back when speed limits were 55. It makes no sense to have two vehicles share a roadway when they have drastically dissimilar speed characteristics.

We have never heard the guy's side of the story. At least I haven't.
Nor have I seen the exact circumstances of the accident.

That indicates he not only saw them, but decided to pass them knowing he couldn’t give the required distance, while not slowing until after he hit them.
