The man accused of killing former East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Councilman Buddy Amoroso was sentenced in court Thursday. Nicholas Alexander has been sentenced to 90 days in jail. But all days were suspended except for 15 of them

quote:

In court this morning, Buddy’s wife, Denise gave an emotional victim impact statement. “Mr. Alexander, by the grace of god, I forgive you. Not for you, but for me” “Robing me of the rest of my life with my husband, my best friend.” “You must repent.”

quote:

A new charge of vehicular injuring was added. For the new charge, Alexander pleaded no contest. He also has to write an apology letter to the surviving victim, Thomas Clement. Authorities say Alexander was behind the wheel of the truck that hit Amoroso and Clement while they were riding bikes last summer. During the investigation, officials learned Alexander failed to reduce his speed and move into another lane. His 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe struck both cyclists from behind.

They couldn’t find a few grams of weed on him to give him some time?

What a joke.

Looks like it was handled in West Feliciana Parish.

Probably someone allied with Chauna Banks, who tried to get JBE to put a black progressive in Amorosso’s seat.

Was the driver intoxicated or in any way impaired?

I mean if the State can’t prove the driver was impaired or distracted and it was purely an accident...I don’t see the reason for locking him up for 20 years.

Repent for what?

Was he doing something malicious when the incident occurred?

If he didn't see a biker and hit and killed him, I imagine he feels pretty shitty about that. Has he not expressed remorse?

Just feels like there's a detail missing that needs to be known that would make it make a bit more sense.

Speed was the factor. Toxicology results were not mentioned in the article.

Was speed a factor or just failing to reduce speed? If he didn't see them then of course he wouldn't reduce speed or change lanes. I know this seems light but if the guy wasn't drunk or high and he didn't intentionally run them down then what do you do? I would hate to think I could go to jail for many many years for what is truly an accident. I already don't think bikers should be on the road so I am sure I am biased.

This is part of the problem. Nobody takes driving as serious as it should be because we do it so much, but this guys direct actions caused someone to lose their life and another to be seriously injured all because he had his head up his arse. I’m not saying he should get the chair, but someone’s life is definitely worth more than 90 days and especially 15.

What if he was going the speed limit and failed to see Buddy coming over a hill?

I understand what you’re saying, but not every unnatural death means someone needs to be jailed. There are accidents that happen.

Bicycles should not be allowed on any road with a speed limit above 45. Bicycles were banned from the interstates back when speed limits were 55. It makes no sense to have two vehicles share a roadway when they have drastically dissimilar speed characteristics.

We have never heard the guy's side of the story. At least I haven't.

Nor have I seen the exact circumstances of the accident.

“I started to slow down and go around them ... there was another vehicle coming on the incoming side and I didn’t want to hit them either so I tried to make the best decision and still go around them,” Alexander wrote.

Alexander had said he had the cruise control for the rented Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving that day set for 35 mph.

The State Police investigation estimated that Alexander’s speed was between 45 and 55 miles per hour at the time he applied the brakes, according to their calculations using a “slide to stop formula.” Police wrote in their report that Alexander braked “post impact,” meaning after he struck Amoroso.

That indicates he not only saw them, but decided to pass them knowing he couldn’t give the required distance, while not slowing until after he hit them.
