I never understood this metric, because it doesn't correlate to "we will not overwhelm hospitals once we reopen things" in an intuitive way.

i don't either but i am not hearing the states discussing hospital resources any longer or "flattening the curve"

the current language is all about declining cases and contact tracing.

because the was the 2nd and 3rd bullets in the "road map" to reopen

the first was allocating resources

they are not moving the goalposts

they are checking off bullet points

they stopped talking about that like a month ago

You don’t even see “flatten the curve” on FB anymore

ETA - which is why I’m saying nothing is changing anytime soon without some material changes

Why, because he says things, based upon his decades of expertise, that you don’t want to hear?

Didn't he also initially say in January the US had nothing to worry about with what was happening in China?
Didn't he Say we didn't need masks?
Then Say we do need masks?
Also, didn't organization he heads provide millions in grants to labs in China starting in 2014 through 2019 some of which went to lab experimenting on bats and coronaviruses.

As head of the NIAID at the NIH stood by while vaccine testing for SARS like corona viruses was halted? Across multiple administrations from both political parties he is the common thread that had a poor initial response to this and even trusting info out of China initially despite 2 prior outbreaks to come up with something better.

He has a lot of knowledge, but he is definitely not infallible and probably has been in position too long (since 1984).

I'm starting to become agitated with this line of thinking.

Risk taking is part of life.

It helps you understand the perspective his recommendations have come from.

People assumed he was making a tough recommendation in the face of clear pain and cost, but that he truly believed it was necessary.

Every time he opens his mouth he shows that all he was doing is trying to limit lives as much as possible. This is a childish/naive approach to a very serious situation.

the recommendations (pdf here LINK

say before we can move from phase to phase these ALL need to be satisfied

1. downward trajectory of illnesses and Covid like symptoms reported, over 14 days

2. downward trajectory of positive cases, over 14 days

3. treat both patients/nurses and antibody testing availability

Who would you have put in position to advise the president on this brand new virus and why? Can you give a specific explanation?

I’m not trying to argue. I’m just giving the man (and all other experts) the benefit of the doubt here given none of them have ever studied this virus. Ever. Of course they were wrong about a lot but they simply apply the vast amount of knowledge and expertise they possess to the situation at hand and give their best guesses. Their best guess is the best the country has to go on. Lord knows y’all sure as hell wouldn’t want me or literally anyone else on here to call the shots and advise the president on this matter regarding how to manage it and the economy surrounding it.

yea they are no longer discussing "flattening the curve" because they know our hospitals can handle the load now

its mostly all about reported cases now which is BS

I'm aware of what the guidelines say

my point was that the 2 weeks of declining cases and contact tracing was bullet points 2 and 3 of the "road map" that was released like a month ago

gotcha, and its all bulshit, because if anything our main goal (our original goal) has been achieved - which is to flatten the curve

any sensible person can see the curve has been flattened so now its a different game

1919 World Series played during height of Spanish Flu mostly in Chicago......no one died. Some guys ended up getting banned from baseball, but people were not dropping like flies.

A lawsuit would never hold up in this context. Proving causation with a barely researched disease is impossible.
