Maybe since this is a cheap and easy to make generic drug that could have something to do with wanting a slow process. Big pharma has got in his pockets to help give them time to find something more expensive to sell to the American people.
It's obvious that Fauci is in the pockets of Big Pharma. He is simply stalling until a vaccine and patented medicine created. There is huuuge money to be made here. Let's not pretend like this it's not a factor.
Anyone can see that Fauci is being extremely conservative with his talk about the chloroquine wanting years of testing before even looking at it. I'm sure this fall when the Big Pharma vax and meds come out, he will be pimping them big time.

Goodness gracious.
He didn't say they should stop using it, he's just telling people to be cautious. As a scientist, that's just how he operates.
I mean people bitch about sky screamers here daily but same people are offended about everything.
Nothing wrong with what he said.

My wife is a pharmacy tech and the first time Trump mentioned the drug, she told me a doctor had come down to the pharmacy a few days before to fill a prescription he had written for himself and his wife for the drug.
But I guess this doctor was just superstitious and doesn’t know anything either.
You failed to mention if they were a dentist, chiropractor, or podiatrist. Perhaps it was a plastic surgeon. Details seem to not matter when using anecdotal "evidence" to support your position

Fauci is a typical doctor. No definitive answer on anything. Every time you ask him a question it's always followed by a maybe. It's like answer the fricking question already. Either you know or you don't.
This is the way the real world works. There are no definitive answers and miracle cures. The most promising info we have is that hydroxychloroquine treatment early in the disease path may help, but does not do much when a patient is critical.
Problem here: Early in the disease path, 95%+ of the people would have recovered anyway, with or without the drug. Even if the drug did nothing, 19 out of 20 people would be around to tell the story of how it helped. When that many people would have recovered to begin with, it takes a large data set to really dig down on what the drug did or did not do.
Of course, we don't have the time to do that study, so we have to shoot from the hip a bit. And, since the drug is generally safe, no reason not to try it. I do find it disheartening a bit that the CDC/FDA/etc.. seem to be having a tough time switching to emergency mode.
Another problem with the study, with this being an ongoing crisis, is that docs facing capacity issues are going to be a little gun shy about setting up a control group (i.e. which set of dying patients are going to be fed sugar pills instead of the real drug).

Yeah and how many pandemics have we had recently? So what is the solution here shutdown society and crash the world economy because, "muh that isn't how we do things in 2020?" If the medicine is having a positive effect that is what you go with for the time being.

Maybe because the ones it didn't help are dead and can't give testimonials. Maybe it really did help. Maybe the ones giving the testimonials were getting better anyway and it was just coincidence with the timing of when they got the drug.
That's the trouble with anecdotal evidence. What looks like a miracle might be a sham when introduced to the rigors of a double blind trial. On the other hand, it might be a miracle that works. On the third hand, maybe that regimen causes you to grow a third hand down the road when administered to a patient with the WuFlu.
We just don't know, and have to temper our excitement to use this combination. I'm not saying don't use it. I'm saying use it with a jaundiced eye until we have time to complete the studies. By the way, why the hell isn't this study being completed in NYC and NOLA right now? There are huge numbers of cases. There's got to be enough of those people that will give informed consent to participate in a large double blind study that will at least tell us whether it's effective in the near term.

OMB
I'll follow the advice of actual doctors working on patients on the front lines.

We've been practicing medicine for quite some time. Being caught up in unfamiliar circumstances isn't a valid reason to throw caution to the wind.

Society isn't being shut down and the world economy isn't crashing. Sit down, shut your moth, and leave the doctoring to competent doctors.

Yeah that is what I am doing and that is why this medicine is being prescribed. Some of you people act like the economy is a non factor when it is. Anyway you seem too stupid to understand this has another side to it.

He’s a big pharma whore. He’s waiting for them to “tweak” the drug, get a new patent, and sell it a new drug. He’s part of the problem. He needs to go.

The other side of this is people who are stupid enough to ignore advice from doctors who are much more intelligent and educated.

Who is ignoring advice? I am doing the social distancing, staying home, going out for essentials when I need to as many others are. I think you are missing the point and that is you can't keep this up for too much longer while you find a vaccine or a cure. You have to find a way to treat it and so far this drug seems to be the best we got. Truth is and it is going to sound cold but you will have more weak and elderly die from this ,and I wish it were not the case ,but you can't shut parts of the economy down for too long. Dealing with a pandemic in the middle of an economic depression, well that would kill more people than this virus. Things can remain as they are for another few weeks but then we are playing with fire for any time after that.

I was just at the CVS pharmacy and asked about this because I have friends with lupus for which hydroxchloroquine is a needed drug. He said they aren't giving up their inventory for COVID so their lupus patients should have a supply.
