7-8 deer were clustered under a tree during a rain and they were all killed by a lightening strike.

I saw a cow get struck by lightning once. Friend's grandparents had a farm out in Picayune & cows kept escaping. We just finished installing an electrified fence when it started to rain.

As we sought shelter in the barn, we watched the cows congregate around the area they were escaping from which was where we just finish installing the electric fencing.

It was one of those summer rain storms that are notorious for crazy thunder I lightning. Suddenly, a bolt hit in the vicinity of the cows & they scattered but didn't go far. We could see one on its side & surmised that it had been struck.

When the rain let up, we walked over to the dead cow & it's tongue was hanging out of its mouth & both eyes had popped out of the head but were still connected by the nerves.

Creepy shite to see up close & in-person.

His grandfather called someone & they brought over a front loader & the four of us were able to get it in the bucket.

We had to get back home to Slidell, so we left shortly after that. I never found out what they did with that cow.

Which one died? The last to fall?

He was the only one leaning on the tree so the others were dead weight (no pun intended).

I saw that happen at a baseball tournament when I was like 12. Coach of the team we were playing got nailed standing by one of those big green power stations they have near parks. He was standing by it because it had a structure where the scoreboard operators sat and was trying to get out of the rain. I was about 20 feet away under an umbrella. Never ran so fast in my life.

I had a similar experience playing baseball as a kid, and a few times in high school at football practice, although no actual people were struck. It’s practically instinct you just start running when it’s that close.

I've been stuck out in the open in a bad storm before. You know you're not supposed to go under the trees, but damned if it isn't real tempting when you're crouched down in the lightning position with your balls in your throat.

I fricking hate lightning.

I thought it was common knowledge that standing under a tree is one of the worst things you could do if caught in a storm...
I could see someone forgetting that fact if it started hailing

My mom and aunt were under a tree and were hit when lightning hit the tree. Knocked both of them out. Burned them everywhere they had metal touching them ( jewelry, snaps, etc). My wife and 2 of mg my kids were on the other side of the tree and weren’t affected. It scared the shot out of me when I heard about it, but they really fared pretty well all things considered. They spent a couple days in the hospital, and were sore, but no long term effects.

They were at the 4th of July celebration on the river in Bossier.
