64 at night
68 during the day

72 when I am away all day.

75 when on vacation.

I do if we plan on being out of the home for more than a few hours.

Not because I'm any kind of neo-tree hugger or because of misplaced self righteousness...I'm just a cheap a bastard.

Friend,

I imagine that you are a strange, sweaty individual already.

Eating the food you constantly post about, I'm guessing you weigh at least 3 bills...

Plus. With all the travel and eating out, you are in no position to lecture.

Go run a mile or two, then go sit in your 75° housr

65 is a bit too much for my wife and daughter. I have had both our thermostats set to 70 for as long as I can remember. Never touch them other than to switch from heat to cool or vice versa during the change of seasons.

Hey there mister...look within your soul. I feel uncomfortable seeing that in print.

How would you feel if everyone follows your lead and in the process disables the grid? How is that any better than a hostile rogue actor setting off an EMP pulse attack?

Last I checked we were free to set our thermostat to whatever temperature we desired.

For now…

I read your post while lying arse naked in the center of my california king bed under two blankets and a comforter because the house is currently at 62 degrees.

In short, I hope you burn your fingers lighting your tithe candle.

As soon as they take out the AC units in The White House and the Capital, then I may turn it up a degree or two.

Smart thermostat... Stays at 78 while we are away... When we are home, 72. No reason to waste money as long as the air stays dry inside.

*a tip he taught me: if you set your thermostat too high at something like 76-78 during the day, your HVAC system will work harder to bring it down later than it will to just maintain 72ish.

An HVAC system doesn't "work harder." It's either on or off (assuming single stage).

We turn ours off when we leave the house. It makes no sense to cool an empty house. We turn it back on when we're heading back (remotely). Doesn't take very long at all to cool down.

We're currently keeping ours at 73 when we are here, maybe 69 at night.

Got a fire going in the fireplace too?

I generally hate waste. Cooling an empty house is just about pointless waste.

That would cost you more money and energy to let it it go to 85 and then have it overwork the ac to get it back to 73.

Myth.

Thermal transfer (read: cooling/heat leaving your house, therefore wasted) speeds up faster as the differences in temperature between inside and outside are larger.

"overworking" the AC isn't a thing. It's on or off (maybe two stage is a different wrinkle. It will run less, overall, if you turn it up or off while you are a way. And it will run longer at a time, when you are on, which is better than starting and stopping.

The only people I know that like their houses at 77-80 are 70+ years old. It might be your preference but that would make you a statistical outlier. Room temperature is defined as 68-72 degrees for a reason.

Were in our 40s and my wife (no pics) and I both prefer it at 77 day and night. We do like the ceiling fan on high at night, but feel cold if the AC is set in the low 70s. In the 60s is like a meat locker to me.
